Slane's 53c stretch job to 58 feet. More pictures on Slane Marine's Facebook page. Apparently the owner loves Whiticar's window profile.

I gotta agree with Jack on that. Cutting and extending a boat just seems over the top to me. Besides, do you move the rudders and props back, or just extend the stern back beyond where it is now? The former seems cost prohibitive and very complex, the latter seems like a pretty funky approach.

And as much as I hate to admit it, those Northern Bay downeasters with a big single and acres of fishing room are starting to look attractive.

Don't do that. Fuel is getting cheaper, not going up. :)

I don't know what they did on that boat, but most boats, they just move the transom back and everything else stays in the same place. It seems funky to me, too, but it all works fine, evidently.

Not always Jim. The extensions are sometimes only good at low speeds. Higher speeds and changes in lift and planing surfaces can make them problematic.

Here it is under construction.

I was wondering about the dynamics of that sort of change. It seems like something would be dragging that shouldn't be dragging when the bow is up.

You know more than I do about this. I know there are some older Hatteras yachts here that have been stretched and that they were said to run fine, but I have not been on them to really see it. It seems to happen pretty often, though- I've seen five or six of them done at various times so it must be pretty common.

Like Jack said, easier to buy the boat you want. But when you start all over again with a new older boat, you are in for a year or two of getting everything right. Which is one of the things that has kept me from ever getting a bigger boat- having to start that process all over again.

Not a Hatteras, but Lazaro is an Ocean 58 stretched 3' to 61' and came out nice because the original fishing cockpit was too small. The extended hull does go back over the original props and the chair is sitting roughly where the old transom was.

This boat is fairly nice (for an Ocean) and was berthed near mine when in Cabo and San Diego so I got a good look. The downside is the owner has reportedly well over $600K in it and you can see the selling price is dropping to about half. Ouch.

Moral: if you build the boat you want, better keep and enjoy it.

Slane did a lot of engineering work on the 58, they moved the new engines aft, added a huge fuel tank under the cockpit and also a gyro. From the pictures it looks like the running gear was also moved aft. Think the boat is going to Italy.

They'll be lucky to get 200K for it. I've seen a couple of very clean 58 Oceans sell in the low to mid $100K range. I was offered a deal on one that had some non structural damage from a storm. Boat had 1200HP MANs and damage wasn't too bad. I could have bought it for 50K but passed.

keep them 45 if fishing is all you going to do. I had one and sold it and bought a 52c it has DD and is slow compared to you guys numbers. It burns about 46 to 50 gallons a hour at 21 to 23 knotts. The ride is just no comparson to the 45. The 52 will reach out and get the next one comming. As for a falling sea there is no better boat. There are a couple around with the qsm 11 and two that i know of with cats. The numbers on those boats are very impressive. they all cruse in the mid to high 20 top out around 34 or so kmots. They have the third state room and a second head and shower. I really loved the 45 but like you guys my family just out grew it. We fish and travel on the 52 and love it. You do not have to jump to far in size to get a bunch of goodies, Once you go bigger you will never go back.

Tim, what does the 52 do with QSMs? Never seen one repowered with them?

Boy, that's the truth, Jack. I have an acquaintance with a 50 Ocean that has souped up 8v92's that are apart more than they're together because he keeps trying to find cheap fixes. He lost his enclosure in Sandy, and his electronics are dated or dead for the most part. He told me last season that he would give it to me (with the engines apart) as is if I wanted it. Cosmetically, it's attractive, and would make a great beach house for the right person. It does go fairly fast when it goes at all, but I suspect that the throttles only have two positions.

I agree with what both of you said, I'm leaning toward a repower and an update rather than a larger boat when the time comes to make a change.

1. It puts what I always considered one of my favorite boats of all time within a VERY Stretched out arms length. and
2. It worries me about doing what I really should, and that's make our 45C perfect for us and having too much money in her. Right now the 45 is all I really need, Probably all I'll ever really need.

The thing is I always come back to knowing the repower and update is the right thing to do. You just see these boats dropping in price and it makes you question what the smart thing to do is.

I'll have to get some concrete cost numbers to do the repower and any additional updates I'd like to do and that should help give me peace of mind on my decision.

Damn you Polarizer, LOL, I think about doing this from time to time and now you've got me going again.

Thanks

Tony

Tony,
two things. Make me an offer. Secondly, if you want, I can share with you some older costs and what I did on my re-power. As the Cricket guy knows, I am about as cheap as they come, but I was just a shrewd negotiator and didn't get carried away with all the fancy stuff, but rather drew out the plan and kept to it, which is really hard to do, once your boat is all opened up.

I do not know. I have ridden in one for two days and never saw it on plane. I fished in the bahamas
with Tobey on SPELLBOUND it has the qsm 11 in it maybee he will post the numbers. The numbers are on this website somethere i have seen them . Sorry i just do not remember. You can squar dance in the engine room his has two generators. Avery nice boat. Also a heck of a nice gentleman who owns it.

Thanks for the offer, it's just I like ours, the 1990 layout has the larger Island queen Stateroom and a 2nd head and shower. Those are ultimately more important to us than more speed. If I was going to sell ours and buy another one it would have a 3rd stateroom. But that being said if the costs aren't crazy when we're ready to make a change or would develope motor issues I'm leaning toward a Re-Power and an update. It's a tough decision for me for sure.

Overall our boat is in great condition as we're constanly making little improvements as needed. Paint overall is good, tower overall is in great shape with a nice shine, the electronics are all updated with Furuno NavNet and Garmin TouchScreen Chartplotters. Interior wise the wood work is great and the heads were updated before we bought her to Vacu Flush and work great.

What it needs.

1. A new canvas pulled over Half Tower, it's showing signs of wear. If anyone has a sugesstion for a good yet fair priced installer in Ft. Lauderdale I'm looking to do it yesterday.

2. Helm chairs and Fighting chair due to be refinished, not bad. Just not Fresh.

3. Cockpit bait freezer is leaking freon and needs a new plate, just happened. Always something.
Anyone know anyone, I'm looking to do this in the next few weeks'

4. Bottom will be due for paint sometime later this year.

5. Removing Giant Entertainment system Box forward in salon and making another sleeping area

Wish List, What I'd Like

1. Update soft goods in the interior.

2. Update galley flooring, appliances, and counter tops. Problem is, it's all in great shape and works perfectly. Hate to mess and spend money on things it doesn't need.

3. Frameless Windows and just a touch up of the paint. Like I said overall very nice and in good shape.

4. Finally, a Repower, with probably Cummins QSM11's. Thats my wish list, and it's order.

I'm fortunate everything else is updated New AC Units a few years ago, and Gen Runs strong.

Any help you could provide on Labor costs of repower and anything, "surprises" you found during the project that altered your plans a bit would be appriciated. I'll PM you my information.

Thnaks

Tony

Shameless bump to the top since I can't stop watching the first video Greg posted, and it's easier to find at the top :-)

Really nice!

So for those with these 85's. I just changed out my fuel fill, and fuel supply lines along with my hydraulics for the steering system. All I can say is the mechanic told me and showed me that the fuel system basically crumbled and he indicated that I was lucky in that at any moment last season, it could have been catastrophic. The fuel fill line amazed me. lucky I didnt fill my bilge with fuel
