36' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1983 - 1987)
Does anyone have an idea who built the original stainless steel exhuast for the 1985 36C Series II? My boat has the turbo charged Cat 3208 engines. It appears the riser/exhuast pipe on the starboard side has several pin holes in it and when we attempt to fill them the hole just keeps creeping further. The boat is 26 years old and I was hoping the company that made them has the drawings and can fabricate a new one. Any help would be much appreciated.
 
Silver solder a stainless steel patch over the affected area. That pinhole is actually an area about 10X that size thats worn out. This is a field repair that is really a bandaid. Is this pipe dry or water jacketed? ws
 
The hole is on the dry side before the wet connection.
 
Most likely Key Marine and they are no more.
 
Ok, well it was worth a try. I was hoping I did not have to take the boat out of service while I had a new one fabricated. I will start looking for vendors to provide me a quote to replace. Thanks
 
Try Metcalf Marine or DeAngelo Marine. One of them probably has it on the shelf.

Look at them and see if they have a tag on them. Mine have a round disc that is welded on the top side with the Key Marine name and logo on it. I'm sure someone makes a direct replacement if it is a Key Marine product. I had custom work done by Marine Manifold out on LI when I repowered my 46C.

They have a direct replacement for my Key Marine mixing elbows on my 65C. I'm sure they'll have what you need. I see you're in the Highlands. Do you have a mechanic you use? There are a couple real good ones there that could point you in the right direction. Send me a PM if you need some help.
 
I spoke with Freddy Quintero at Deangelo in FL and with Paul at Marine Manifold Corp in LI. They were both within a few dollars of each other for the exhaust and the insulation blanket. The nice part about using Marine Manifold Corp is that I can drop off and pick up myself instead of shipping and would not have to deal with shipping cost. Saltshaker, do you know of Marine Manifold's reputation? They didn't have a direct replacement but they will fabricate the exhaust after I drop off the old ones to use as a template. I use a yard in Leonardo NJ but do most of the work myself. Thanks for the help though.
 
Marine Exhaust of AL has most of Key Marine's original drawings but Mark (of Marine Exhaust AL) told me they are not digital and he would have to filter through all the folders to find it if he even has it. I am waiting on his price quote I make my final decision.
 
My father had used Paul of Marine Manifold when he bought his boat 13 years ago. He hasn't had any issue with his work during this time. Paul does make it down to our area every now and then and picked up the old exhausts, fabricated new ones and delivered the new ones on the way down to South Jersey to either Ocean or Viking. I got my insulation blankets from the guy who used to make them for Marine Manifold, however, I believe he is now retired.

It's nice to know we have another Hatteras in the area. We might be able to form our own club.

My experience with Marine Manifold has been fantastic. They have done work for me a few times, always top notch. I've referred them a few times and everyone has had a good experience with dealing with them and the quality of their work. I spoke to my mechanic today and asked him who he uses for this stuff. He uses Marine Manifold exclusively. Incidentally he is in the Highlands but is a Detroit only shop.
 
I spoke with Paul last night and I will be taking the port exhuast off the boat on Saturday. I will run them out to him on Monday. Glad to hear all the positive feed back on him and his company.

Saltshaker: I think I know mechanic you are speaking of, he has a great reputation on DD. My boat slip neighbor had his 672 rebuilt two years ago by him. I can't recall his name but this guy was suposed to be the go to guy in our area for DD.

MicroKap: Do you keep your boat in Red Bank? I am at Sandy Hook Bay Marina, used to be the Original Oyster in Highlands.
 
I was actually at Atlantis Yacht Club in Monmouth Beach a couple slips down from Salt Shaker, but have recently moved Red Bank (Irwin's Marina, behind Riverview Hospital).

I look forward to seeing you in the area. Maybe we can have a raft-up behind the Atlantic Highlands breakwater or if you come down the Navesink, there's always Blossom Cove. It may take you away from a day of fishing. :)
 
I know Edwin's well. I have gone there for the fireworks a few times. Now I go, raft up with friends and then return to the marina around midnight after the mad dash. I plan on being out there this July 3rd maybe we can hook up.

Russ Eia is the mechanic. I highly recommend him. He also works on MicroKap's boat. Good luck with your exhaust. I'm sure you'll be happy with Paul and Marine Manifold.

How long have you been in the Highlands with the Hatteras? I had a 46C named Sea Enterprise that I kept in Monmouth Beach. New boat is a 65EB but it's currently in Florida.
 
This is my 6th season at Sandy Hook Bay Marina. The boat was down at Trump in AC since new.
