hi Pete you are right my friend said 550 gal. in his regular tanks....i don't know where i got that 700 gal. from....

Joe
1981 56' MY
Lake Gloria II

The 53c holds 1050 and planes no problem even with 12/N's

Joe, I suspect you picked up the 700 gallons from the 53 MY mid 80's extended deckhouse version. That is its fuel capacity. Thanks for checking this out.

Rssmith, I fail to see the comparison. And my numbers are from my old memory, so give me some latitude. Your 53 with her 12V71N's likely produce a combined horsepower of around 1100-1200 HP and carries no fuel in the forward third of the hull. The 1977 53 MY may have 8V71N or 8V71TI with horse power combined around 700 for the "N" engines and 850 for the "TI" engines. The MY being discussed also is carrying 3500 lbs. of fuel in the forward third of the hull. My opinion, no way is that 53 MY going to plane.

Perhaps Joe could ask the owner what real life is?

Pete

No fuel in the forward third of the hull? Try 450 gal of fuel and 275 water plus the 350 gal mid tank is right in the center.

"planes" stands for pushes a ton of water using a lot of fuel while moving along softly, I think....

Original poster here. Interesting to read the varied responses and individual preferences. I have read Voyaging Under Power by Beebe and Caulder's Boatowners Mechanical Manual (well I have read parts of it) and for my needs, I think a Long Range Cruiser is the right Hatteras for me. Displacement speeds will do just fine, thank you.
Returning to the original question, if anyone is familiar with this boat, it appears no one is.
Some have certainly posted what they think the value may be, we have a range of opinions from $0 up to $60k. Again that is expected with limited input.
So here is a summary of my discussion and information:
1980 Hatteras 42 LRC has an average retail value of $99k - $110k
Assume this boat needs a new generator ($15k), all new seacocks, seals, hoses etc($10k), bottom clean and paint ($8k), interior work ($10k), deffered maintenance such as change all fluids, filters, impellers Etc ($5k), batteries and electrical work ($5k). Rough estimate puts the value at around $55k.
Now the big question, because a sea trial is not possible, what could a blown tranny, engine overhaul, running gear problems, etc represent as a possible cost or should I say potential expense? Remember an engine survey has been completed in the slings with a clean bill of health (for what it's worth).
How much does a tranny rebuild cost? How much for an engine rebuild? I think I can safely assume the worst case, price in that cost and make an offer. Thanks.

Here are a couple of opinions on your questions based on my experience with my 48 LRC which shares many of the same power train components with the 42. Good news on the reverse gears (transmissions), as they are BW 72C Velvet Drives with reduction gears. The 48 uses 2.97 to 1 reduction but the 42 may be different. These are simple, easy to fix, low costs units. Hard for me to imagine you could spend more than $2.5K on a trashed unit. In frame rebuild for a 453N no more than $12K per engine. You did not mention the exhaust risers. If original, you definitely should consider replacement at $7.5K per engine. Running gear, inspect while on the hard, check both steering station pumps for any leaks, check the system pressure at the oil reservoir and assure it is holding at least 15 psi. If the boat has the original packing glands, do not be tempted to replace them with dripless models. Just repack with Gore packing. Probably a $500 job to do both shafts and rudders.

Perhaps some members in the business can adjust my price opinions to current day experience.

I believe you'll need to blend some of that invested capital improvements into your future enjoyment of the boat as opposed to the 100% of the buying price. If you can get it into the purchase price, great job...

I've been on a few of these LRC, and their seaworthiness is not significantly better than the MY, but at 42' it's a solid boat for its class. You'll still want stabilizers for open, deep waters...

Rssmith, just to confirm how I read your response, with all fuel and water tanks topped off, your 53C planes? If that is the case what speed are you making on plane?

Pete

My 53c with 3406E-800's runs 21 knots at 1850, 24 knots at 2050, 28 knots at 2325 WOT when fully loaded. She actually feels better at full load and isn't really bothered by the extra weight. In fact, I'd say just the opposite. She seems to like the weight.

That being said I hauled at 25% wet and tipped right under 50,000#, quite a bit below the original reported numbers. My full load is likely still south of 55,000#.

Met a 53c with a tower in Freeport that had brand new 900 HP volvos installed on an otherwise original boat. The mechanics had flown to town to de-tune the engine. As she approached 30 knots she road up her keel and fell over on her chine, so they said...I'd hate to have written that check only to be forced to leave those extra horses in the barn, permanently.

15-16 gets it over the hump then it starts to scoot

Fuel was $1.44 with taxes earlier this week at Ocean Petroleum Brunswick GA. Another $.05 off for 1000 or more. I could not get there. Nothing in Florida even gets close right now. Ft. Pierce truck fill quoted $1.75.

Lady Brockhaven is probably re-storable. Like I said when when was on her 6-7 years ago she was in above average shape. I help him get a new refer in that year. Sea cocks need to be exercised and most likely will be fine when serviced. Hopefully they are soaking is something. She had stabilizers that real good. She most likely has outdated electronics.

Like Pete said the tranmissions are BW and 2.97 to 1 reduction. I bought a new one 10 years ago for $3000 at an expensive shipyard. Should have paid $1800. I always find its the little crappy things that drive the cost of restorations up and up. Like the motor mounts which Hatteras built on site and are very expensive get a machine shop to make them. Things like headliners and mold removal.

I'll be down Stuart in a few days. Might get a chance to run over and see her. Did you go see her yet.
Call Doug Birely surveyor 954-646-7219 he knows the 42s and general LRCs. He may give it a quick look for a few bucks. He lives right there.

Thanks, I have not been down to look at the boat yet. I'm in SC. If you get the chance to see her it certainly be helpful. I will give Doug a call and see what he has to say.

Just out of curiosity what are the small fins just ahead of the stabilizers? They look like vortex generators on an aircraft wing. Is there a point where the stabilizers cavitate and loose effectiveness? Or are they for some sort of harmonic vibration?

I think they are to re-direct crab pot lines around the fins. If I ever see a source I would add some.

The 58 LRC is a lot of boat beneath the waterline! Drawing close to 6' I agree with David, it's not the best island hopping boat.
52 tons in the slings, if I recall correctly.
David, any pics of Big Skooch?

It is my understanding that the small fins in front of the stabilizers are called Pope Deflector Fins and are for the purpose of protecting the large stabilizer fins from damage involving most things in the water that may hit them, such as logs, crab pot lines, floating debris, etc... Seems like a handy feature.

Man, I miss that boat. That was a gorgeous 58 LRC. The most TV sets I've ever seen on one private vessel. :)

:)
Me too Jim!
I miss the projects and piddling around making her a great vessel...
But most of all I miss what an exceptional cruising boat she is.

As mentioned above, LRC's are no speed demons and at 7-7.5 knots, we spent many evenings pulling into anchorages and marinas after dark. For some reason, it always took us longer to get from point A to point B than anticipated! :) And of course, there is NO Full Throttle. That only got us 1-2 more knots!

The only thing I don't miss are the bills that came with keeping her in pristine condition.
