  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
In my continued quest to find AFFORDABLE diesels for my boat....I have recently thought about buying an entire boat with diesels in it. From what I can see.....I could buy the WHOLE BOAT with 2 engines AND a genny for less than ONE new Cummins.

Anybody know if the 3208's in either of these would fit in my 1976 36C? I know 3208 naturals where an option....but wondering if the turbo's would make it not fit?????

Turbos are too tall. Naturals get a 15 kt cruise. They are about 210 hp.

Why not just buy engines and transmissions if your going to do it.

Mako marina in freeport ny usually has some good used Cummins around

Cuz I cant afford the $100k price tag......

The used engine market has to be less than that.

They can be squeezed in, but the aftercoolers will require raising the deck in the salon. Service is a little challenging because of the size of the engines. Also, what HP are you looking for? 375 is pushing it for that hull.

I would try to find RTO's rather than buying a boat for the engines. There is a tremendous amount of labor in removing them, and what are you going to do with the donor afterwards? Also, you may be able to find some lower HP B series RTOs i.e. 270s that should give good performance for a reasonable number.

I had 260hp turbos in my '75 36C. It was a snug fit on the overhead. Cruise was 17 kts, max speed was around 20 kts. You can get turbo 3208s up to 320hp.

So much work for such old technology.
The labor to convert is the same for new or old engines. Then again new has less issues with parts that are unavailable.

I'd find something newer that's not a v8.

Yanmar, cat or cummins in line 6's are all a better fit.

Why not sell your boat and buy a repowered/refit 36C? The donor boat idea isn't a good one unless it's next to free. There are plenty of engines on the used market. A set of used or remaned 6BTAs would be a good choice.

Slane is doing a few 36Cs with the 480HP QSB5.9.

Keep it intact and use it while you decide what to do with the Hatt.

On more than one occasion I have looked at Cummins powered boats on YW and considered buying one for the low hour B series engines. Another consideration is what trans do you have, what will you need, and does the "donor" boat have the right ones. That along with a decent diesel genset (to sell) may, IMHO make the whole idea start to sound viable.

5.9 not 6.7?

I know there's a savings on the reman packages but I wonder if it's enough to warrant the older engine.

The 6.7 is superior in just about every way.

Maybe the 6.7. They are brand new and in the 500HP range

The 6.7 goes up to about 550.

That's sounds about right now that I think of it. I remember thinking that's a lot of HP for those engines and that boat. Thought they were 5.9 but I'm sure I was wrong

The one in my truck is about 400 hp and 800 ft lb torque from the factory. That's also with all the epa crap to reduce mileage, power and efficiency.

How fast do you want to go? I had my 36C out a few hours ago and she soared right up to 23+ without breaking a sweat. At that speed, we had 750 rpm left. They run clean, they are fairly quiet (not as quiet as the QSBs, I admit) and they don't use a lot of fuel. And these are remans.
