1510 Club changes name

It's official. I'm now a member of the Hatteras Classic Club. I was advised that I am the first new non-1510 member since the club's name change. C'mon, more of you need to join! I need some company here.

It was easy. Fill out the application on their website, print it and mail it in with a check for $125.

Welcome, Eric. It's a fun group.

We attended our first rendezvous last September in Norfolkand had a great time. John Grey is putting together this year's rendezvous in Baltimore, and from what he has told me it should be very informative with several interesting workshops. Hope to see you there.

In the beginning it was a pretty restrictive membership. My wife and I looked thru the chain link fence at the first rendezvous, because we were “want to be” Hatteras Owners at the time. We attended the second rendezvous as owners! I cannot tell you how much I learned the first few years and how much friendly help was given to me by other members. Over the years, the membership has broadened to include non owners. Since my 1510 is in south Florida, this foolish two Hatt owner has been taking his 46 Hatt Convertible for the last 5 or 6 years with NO raised eyebrows to the Rendezvous on the Chesapeake Bay.

The first two years we had Great Lakes rendezvous, we had two boats. Most of us rode along and spent the nights in motels or Bed & Breakfasts. I think everyone had a good time. We’re boaters! Of course we would rather go by boat. We just don’t have the boats to carry everyone. Meet us in Mackinaw! That would be awesome.

For years, we did south Florida winter cruises. We ran out of trip leaders. Next year, probably in March, we will have a winter cruise from Miami/Ft Lauderdale to Key West. The plan is to spend some nights in marinas and some anchored out. During the day, the southern boats carry the northern boaters along for the ride and they spend the nights in nearby motels or bed & breakfast.

In my opinion, the members who attend the rendezvous, either cruise a lot or own project boats they are working on. The previous poster, Ben Fishel, bought a junker 53’Classic. His wife Tina and Ben have worked like dogs to do a beautiful job restoring their Hatteras. Some owners pay others to work on their Hatts.

This club is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of old Hatts. My membership has been invaluable. It has actually been more valuable to me than this forum. You all know how valuable this forum is. Ask Steve A. McPherson, aka SAMs Marine, why he has supported the club from the beginning.

I just bought my first hatt. it's my 11th boat & i'm not looking to change no time soon. It's a 1979 43DC hull #279 Is this a clasic or will I have to wait. I am A boater & know many boat owners . I got this hatt from a boat owner & the neglect is expected. Some owners just dont know the importance of maintence.
I was boatless for 4 years ,( just rented) it ws good for awhile ,but I'm back.
I might just join this club when I get things figured out.

Heck, I wasn't interested when they ONLY allowed 1510 boats in. I'm sure not interested now that they've opened it up to owners of "those other Hatteras boats," whatever they are. :)

That would be me and folks like me, who aren't wealthy enuff to own a 15-10 boat. Whereas before we had to stand around out in the cold with our maritime noses pressed against the Strataglass, now we can stand at the bar and make you guys uncomfortable, since you have to hobnob with your inferiors while we ape our betters. This will suck for you, but we will enjoy it hugely. See you soon. The great unwashed are coming to a marina near you, together with our unwashed boats. :)

Oh Lord...next thing you know they'll be allowing boats in the club that have fewer than three heads or maybe even boats without a washer and dryer. It's like watching a bad Downton Abbey episode.

:)

The 1510 club brand has definitely been sullied. No question about it. I see on the rendezvous schedule that two partial days are set aside for a bunch of total strangers to spend their time traipsing through everyone's boat in attendance. Not so sure about that particular activity. I guess when all the boats there in previous gatherings were similar model and size, it made some sense. I can't imagine why anyone would want to see my modest little elderly craft. Perhaps to point and snicker ? :) In the other classic yacht club that I belong to we have different categories based upon boat's age, length, construction material, etc. I keep hoping for a "most cynical owner" category. When it happens, I got that one nailed.

I'll just be satisfied with the 1510 Club hat that Roger gave last year.

I'm starting my own club, for owners of 36 convertible Series I Hatteras yachts. The 12-6 club, or whatever the beam is, I forget. It's going to be so exclusive I won't be able to get into it myself. Kind of like Groucho Marx said- "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member..."

OK I'll dump in my .02. Though I've only attended one 1510 rendezvous and that was a 3-4 years ago, I have to say that I enjoyed it very much for several reasons. It was a great venue (Cambridge Yacht Club), with a lovely group of people in the club and we had a lot of fun. I also enjoyed the technical/educational piece on Saturday and found that a valuable exchange of knowledge.

I did very much enjoy the open boats- this gives us not only a chance to show off our boats and update on projects we've done, but also see how others have done things, get ideas and again exchange knowledge.

I plan to attend the Baltimore event this year as well and looking forward to it :)
