Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I've seen them on 70 footers, 63 footers, and a lot of other models. While I have seen a lot of discussion about replacement for the 8 cylinder Detroits I have not seen much for this model. I was wondering if you were to replace them on your boat what would be your engine of choice and why?

There are many choices in that 6-900 HP range now. Cummins, Cat, Volvo, Man. All are 6 cylinder and much smaller and lighter weight.

But none sound as sweet as a 12v71.

The Cat C-18 can be a desirable choice to replace a 12V71TI but the value equation is a big loser in a 54' range.

You can repower with c-18 remans for very close to the same price as rebuilding the 71's (or 92's) for that matter. I see reman c-18's in the $50k/ea range quite often. You would need to add a $15k/ea gear to them and of course other stuff as well like 32v-24v conversion, engine bed...etc

Do you know of anyone that have repowered/refit a motor yacht that has 12v71 with CAT reman C18s ? Any performance numbers? Regards, Edward

I have seen a 70 Hatteras that had the 12-V71 s replaced with Detroit Series 60 s . No one seems to talk about those motors very much , but I don’t hear bad things either. ( That might change quickly) The boat was unusual as it had walk around decks . I discussed the work on the boat with the man who changed the engines . This was done through the galley sole and fly bridge. An absolutely big job . A sport fish would be far easier. I could never bring myself to cut big holes in the hull. So I think rebuilding 12-V71s would be about a third of the cost of re- engining a motor yacht.

Here is the comparison once again

Series 60 is an absolute awesome engine. They were never used much in marine applications, but truckers love them.

Anybody happen to know approx how long a c18 is with gear?
