This may be a foolish question, but...

so, I did and oil & filter change and have not really used generator since
Can I keep existing new filter on there when I change the oil again tomorrow with the appropriate 10w-30 diesel rated oil (since the filter really hasn't seen any use), or is there a problem due to that filter having the gasoline based 10w-30 in it (and I imagine it will still be holding a bit inside even after the oil change)?

If you want to save the filter go ahead and spin it off, dump the oil and spin it back on. You'll be fine.
