  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
anybody saw the biod article in the lat PMY issue ? they used 2 glacier bay 34s, one on bioD to compare... while reading the article i noticed the side bar on the boat... 300k for the bare bone version with a pair of 250 Outboards. add Air, Genset, half tower and the merc diesels and the price goes to ... $560K

yep.. over half a million for a 34 foot express type boat !

or you can buy an early 90s Hatt 52 convertible, rebuild the engines and probably have some change left for electronics or interior work.

needless to say, the hatt will barely depreciate while the glacier bay will loose 100k in the first 12 to 18 months.

insane...

Yeah, but if somebody didn't buy new boats, they'd never become old boats for someone like us to enjoy! And, the price is relative. These Old hats were pricey when they were new also. I do agree, however with your observations on first year depreciation.

Chapeaux! It was great meeting you this past summer at Piney Narrows. Your boat is beautiful. The dolphin video on your homepage is excellent! Eric

I don't get it either. When I bought my 38 Fountain 2003 the price tag was $180K, now the same boat with an extra engine (four of them) is $320K for a new one. You can buy a real nice Hat for the same money. Matter of fact you should look at what you can buy for $500K! This is not a hard decision for me.

Thanks, Eric...it was good having a yarn with you this summer. It seems like we should probably stop cruising for a year and finish the boat, but as we all know, we don't know how many summers we have left. Yours is the truly beautiful boat. We'll be coming through Piney Narrows this coming summer in another attempt to get to the Great Lakes. We'll be sure to look you up.

Chris (Boss Lady),
I had a look at your project on the web....quite a project. I'm glad ours isn't (at least I hope it isn't) quite as extensive as yours. However, it looks like it is going well and soon will render a beautiful boat. We purchased Chapeaux! in '03 with the intent to perform the rehab in stages. Did pretty well, beginning with the galley (see http://www.adrift-again.com/()/3.htm ) and then replacing the Onan with a 21.5 kohler, added an inverter system and batteries and proceeded to start the saloon. However, a lightning strike at sea ( http://www.adrift-again.com/zapped.htm ) changed the timeline. We had to put Chapeaux! on the hard in Stuart and while there, had the entire boat faired primed and painted with three coats of Awlgrip. The lightning had caused some issues of leakage and burned areas that needed immediate attention, so we pushed the schedule for that part of the project rehab up a bit. Addressed all coring problems on both the decks and overhead. While doing that, we replaced all portlights, windshields and window units on the boat, as well as matching all door glass to the new more modern grey tint glass in the windows. Had the exterior of the doors finished in Awlgrip white (a concession to my wife, Sally, who is the brightwork specialist :p ). Now, she is getting there, but I have finally realized that it will never be "all the way there". It seems that the closer we get, the more items we find that we want to change. Kind of like the theory that if you keep cutting the distance you have to go in half, you'll get close, but never arrive :-).

Man, that must have been a hair raising experience! We are making good progress on the boat. Stay tuned. I like what you are doing, keep up the good work, it is worth it.
