What engine oils are people using.

it seems harder to find the engine oils these days that meet at least the following: 40 wt API CF-2 rating Low % Ash (< 1.00 %) Rotella T-1 (straight 40) seems widely available at a reasonable price, but it is at the upper limit of 1% Ash. Some of the other engine oils with lower % Ash...

    My Swim Platform repair project.

Thanks Robert. I had the fabricating shop duplicate the original brackets since the brackets were 3 different sizes. By that I mean due to the V shaped transom, the center bracket had the longest transom leg and the 2 outer brackets had shorter transom legs. Of the 5 brackets, there are 3...

    My Swim Platform repair project.

As for the swim platform, I made some minor repairs, checked for moisture (there was some but not much) and then painted both sides with Oyster White Awlgrip. I fastened the swim platform onto the brackets using 5/16” 316 stainless carriage bolts, 4 for each bracket. Jon

    My Swim Platform repair project.

Some dissecting and hole drilling to establish the boundaries of the bronze plates. I then repaired all the fiberglass with biaxial glass and West epoxy and faired everything before covering the repaired areas with Interprotect 2000 then bottom paint. I used 3/8” silicon bronze fasteners...

    My Swim Platform repair project.

Much has been written about swim platform repairs but in my repair project, I found a bit of over engineering in the transom While hauled out to repair my trim tabs, I found the old bronze swim platform brackets had cracks right at the 90 degree welded joints. See the black circles. I decided...

    Morning funny

A New York attorney representing a very wealthy art collector called and asked to speak to his client. "Saul, I have some good news and I have some bad news." The art collector replied, "You know, I've had an awful day, Jack, so let's hear the good news first." The lawyer said, "Well, I...

    Dogs on Boats

What "Avenger" said in post #2 is exactly what we did with our Jack Russell Marlie. We also use crates with every dog we have ever had and we have a small plastic travel crate which she loves. Marlie has worked her way on up and now loves the motion and especially the sounds of our Detroits...

Galvanic Action - Stbd. Rudder Post

I have what looks to me like galvanic corrosion occurring on the rudder post and the base plate thru hole on the Stbd. side. The hose clamp attaches a bonding wire from the rudder post to the base plate. I replaced the cutlass bearings for both rudders 3 years ago. Just so you know, I have a...

    Fire! Tidwater Yacht Marina

We came through Dorian nicely however for some reason the marina management (Suntext Marinas) decided to turn all the power off in the marina after the storm was moving away. We had tropical storm conditions and a 2' surge at the time of high tide. So Suntext management decides to cut power at...

Changing the primary and secondary fuel filters using a priming pump.

I know that this topic has been widely discussed but I am going to ask anyway. Please forgive the redundancy! I have 6-71 N's JT modified with duel racor primaries and canister mounted element filters for the secondaries. My boat came with a fuel priming pump mounted between the racors and the...

Fire Control companies in the southern Chesapeake, Va. area.

I am in need of a fire control company to refill my CO2 tank and help me relocate the pull switch. I accidentally moved the control cable enough (and it was not much) to discharge the CO2 tank. What a sound that made! I quickly got off of the boat and later on set up a fan along with the...

Tank shapes on my 1981 43' DCFB.

I have a question regarding the tanks on my 43' DCFB. There are four and they are as follows: The most forward is a 90 gallon holding tank integral to the hull. Aft of that tank is a 130 gallon water tank, rectangular, flat bottom and sitting on top of the keel. Aft of that tank is a 90...

Where to purchase GFO - Gore Tex stuffing box packing?

Any recommendations for a vendor to buy Gore-Tex packing fiber from? Thanks! Jon

Correct size GFO (Gore-Tex) fiber packing for rudder shafts.

Our 1981 43' DCFB needs to have both rudder shafts re-packed. My Hatteras manual specifies 1/2" flax packing and the diagram shows 3 rings. I know I will probably need more than that and staggered joints 90 degrees apart. I plan to use 1/2" GFO. I just want to verify that others have used...
