Many of you have asked about starting an official Hatteras Owner's Club. We have discussed it with several people, including the folks at Hatteras. I wanted to share my thoughts and get some feedback before going further.

Can we vote for more then one thing??

Just started laughing when I got to the last one. Maybe that question should have been first! :)

I'm quite happy with the status quo. I enjoy the site and read often, post when my small boat experience seems to be meaningful. What does official HOF mean?

Yeah - I tried to figure out how to do that. What I wanted to determine is how many people would actually be willing to pay some amount for the extras that might come with a club membership. I have an opportunity to involve some individuals with years of experience in the Hatteras service area which I think might work well for everyone involved if I can determine a way to cost justify it.

Doug, I think $200/year is going to turn off most of us. $100 might fly. BUT, you missed the one item we were all talking about a year or so ago.... INSURANCE!!. If we could get better rates because we are more conservative and knowledgeable boaters, most everyone would sign on.

Some rendezvous' would also be of interest. 5% discounts on clothes etc don't mean much to me.

Hi Bob - I know the possibility of including the insurance part does exist. However, I purposely did not include that in the initial poll. While there might be opportunities to go there at a later time (after sufficient club membership was generated), insurance is something that would have to involve a third party familiar with such things.

Thanks for the feedback.

Doug,
I would gladly pay a fee for membership discounts are great ,an insurance program is needed, but technical advice for my 78 vintage Hat would be key. Great idea count me in !!

I like the idea! I wonder if creating a private section for paid members only would decrease the volume of quality reponses on the forum?

I think a 'members only' section would be counter productive to what this site is all about. We're here to share experience of maintaining & enjoying our boats, not create 'cliques' for the 'in' crowd.

I also agree that $200 might be a bit steep for many. Participation would be much higher if the price were only $100.

As I have said many times in the past, I would not object to a fee to join/participate on this site just as it is, like boatdiesel had (has? - I stopped visiting about a year ago and didn't see any reason to renew). But I would not join a separate section of this site just for owners.

An insurance option would be great too ... but let's get the club started first then add new items to address.

I agree that $200 might scare away some potential members ... maybe if enough pledge to join the amount can come down???

I'm on an inland lake with no other Hatteras yachts, but can't wait to join and get the burgee to fly!!

Okay, $100 is better than $200 but what about a lifetime thingy too?

Noel

Can make the most sense to some of us.

I like to visit this site often, and I learn a great deal, but unfortunately, I do not have the "expertise" of many members here, to contribute a lot. That said, I would not mind contributing somewhat "financially", but I believe $200.00 is more than I can justify. Please remember, there are many people like me that are boatless right now, and are in the process of looking. This site, I believe is an extraordinary example of really good people, who share their experiences with others because they love their boats and boating. A 200 buck membership fee is pretty stiff, and should be left for the Bertram, and Viking sites, where people are struggling to find parts, and help for their older boats. I belong to boat deisel which is 25 bucks a year, and 6 other boating forums that are free. They obviously do not compare with the guys and gals on this forum, but right now, I am trying to save up enough money to leave the dock, once I buy my new to me Hat!

This site reminds me of NPR. If the administrators need donations to keep the site up and working properly I am all for it.

I think people would pay a fee to get an opinion from a person experienced with Hatteras maintenance, and all "members" should have access to the expert responses. A low fee ~$25/year to get access to the maintenance section, and $25 to ask your question. The rest of the site should be free.

Thanks guys - that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I'm not even sure there should be a membership fee at all. I like keeping everything free. We do have an opportunity to enlist the services of someone with many years of experience to help with service issues but there will be some cost involved so, again, I'm just looking for a way to justify it and be able to retain those services. I do not like the idea of the private section of the web forum either but it came up in discussions so I included it in the options. Thanks again for the input.

Hey Doug,

I propose a solution that benefits everyone...

Perhaps the individual might offer consulting time, payable by charge card in tenths-of-an-hour increments, to those who wish to get individual, on the phone, assistance.

In return for the business, perhaps the individual in question might author a (? monthly) column on frequent maintenance issues...

Thus, the forum as a whole benefits, people who need direct and in-depth help have access to it and the expert makes a living...

Your thoughts?

Steve
