About 12:30pm this ship lost power and plowed into the south end seawall, took out about four lifts, knocked one boat off its lift and came to a stop. Wow.

Did you notice the "Safety First" sign on the bridge! LOL

hopefully no one was hurt.
and those are some very cool pictures.

WOW! Scary sight! I sure hope nobody was injured.

I bet that ship is a single screw. It seems every time I hear of a marine accident involving a ship that lost power it is usually a single screw and we all know what happens when a ship loses power.

I'll stick with twin-screws and the extra safety margin that two engines provide thank you very much!

OMG, I hope no one was hurt.

That'll wake you up at night. Were you onboard at the time? Was there any warn prior to impact (5 or more short blasts or one long one)?

As a liveaboard, I would assume events like that are not even on your list of hazards to be on the alert for. Someone could have been killed.

Interestingly, we can't find a single photo or video on the local news of this; just headlines that say "Boat Accident."

Well Miami IS KNOWN for it's crazy drivers.... But this one is wild.

Am guessing it happened so fast he didn't have time to even try and put the anchor down...

I bet he's very hard aground in there. It may be interesting to see how they get that out of there.

I guess that's one way to avoid the lengthy wait list to get into a marina around here.

How much is the marina charging him for transient dockage for one night?

Doug

Wow, that is pretty bad. Most of those small container ships are single screw. I couldn't help but laugh when I noticed the stb. anchor was down even though I know that is the procedure. I suspect he was hard aground when he stopped. The small boats, lifts and pilons probably only slowed him down.

It makes one wonder about the safety of poorly maintained ships that come and go into our ports. Kind of like the tractor-trailors that come up from Mexico not having to meet our safety standards.

I think its $3.50 per foot per night! Ha! It's gone now, I didn't see them remove it. I saw four big tugs around it at one point. Someone said the only thing that stopped it was that it ran aground. Thats kinda scary. No one was hurt and the boats that are usually on the lifts that got destroyed happened to be gone for the night! Lucky them. Lets see, big yacht fire a month ago, now this... Whats next??? and by the way, I live at the other end of the Marina but I'm all the way out at a t-head. I suppose one could come through and .... Naw....
We didnt hear a thing. But then again it was Saturday night. :)

The Boat Aid guys that help put up the tape and stuff said a little boat could drive right through the new hole, no problem.

Speaking of fire, I got a shot of the Big Viking sportfish (2004 72 Convertible) that was being towed up the river. I'll take that flats boat!

Those look like Hi-tide lifts....I'm a dealer, ask them if they want to replace them HAHA

Hey Capt Ned,

Heidi and I were first hand EAR WITNESSES to the Freighter vs Sea Wall Incident of 2008. We were watching TV and all of a sudden there was a loud, persistent, grinding, low frequency screeching that was like 20 to 30 seconds long.

We jumped up and looked outside and there she was. Shish Kababed Seawall. There was no yelling or screaming and FOR SURE NO 5 Blasts before the impact ! It was dead quiet after the incident. So I turned on my handheld vhf to 16 and nothing. The Pilot boat that was escorting the freighter came in to the marina where you took your pics, took a look around and went outside again.

Of course you could'nt tell if anyone was hurt, or if there was a fuel leak so I called the Coast Guard, the Miami Beach Police and the Marina (their "emergency line" sends you to a recording by the way). I also got a few photos but from a birds eye view, 22 stories up, yours are much better but maybe I'll still try to post a few.

I also heard the CG ask the Capt how he hit the seawall when the weather was perfect, and he had a pilot boat and the Capt said that they were making their turn to enter the ships channel when everything blacked out and they lost control and hit the seawall.

Capt Ned, is it wrong to use that new opening to enter the marina. It's much closer to my slip and I could save some Fuel...Ha Ha.

In all seriousness, Thank God noone was injured and no fuel leak developed. Also, just for fun, the CG asked the Captn how much fuel he had on board and he reported 116 K tons. The CG asked him how many gallons is that ? For a gold star, what did the Capt tell the CG ?

"(116000*2000)/(8.34*0.9)

3 Million Gallons? That can't be right. Where's Kid Krush when you need him???
