Teak Wood Maintainance

Would the experts on here please advise, generally, how to preserve the teak rails and possibly the interior? The wood on my recently aquired 58MY appears to be quite preatty but I do not really know what teak should look like. It is not grey or weathered. Any recommendations on products?

You need to determine what is on the rails now. If it is varnish(most likely), then stick with a good varnish like Epiphanes, Captains, or Schooner and recoat with 3-4 coats each year(north) or every 3 months(south). If it is something else like Sikkens, you will have to stick with that or stip it down and start over. What does it look like now? Nice clear finish with all wood grain showing and an amber hue?

Interior: Search for interior wood in the archives. There have been several discussions regarding what to use on the interior. Some like gloss finish, others like the OEM oiled look.

Look into having covers made for your handrails. Only remove when you want the look and you will have protection from the sun damage. Your rails can last years with covers on them most of the time!

If the existing finish looks good, I'd ask the PO what he had on the rails and how long. Consider staying with that, adding maintenance coats as suggested.

Re: teak swim platforms - I tried in vain to keep mine nice until I just sanded everything off and simply oiled it. They turn that nice weathered gray and stay looking very presentable through all conditions, salt water, etc. Also, my ski boat has a big bare teak swim platform that's 9 years old and still looks good. I do still gloss coat my rails, because I like the look.
