  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series II (1985 - 1987)
New to the boating family, just bought a nice 58' MY down in Fort L. Could someone advise the best oil out there to use in these engines?

Thanks so much.
Ron

Here is an approved list from another thread. The lower the ash content the better and make sure it is CF2 rated.

I know this has been posted before, but I'm just about ready to pick up some more Exxon XD3 40wt and I thought I'd check the specs for sulfated ash of the competitors first. Here are the results:

Exxon XD3____________.80%
Mobil Delvac 1240______.80% (if you can still find it)
Castrol Assuron________.80%
Valvoline Fleet Plus_____.80%
Delo 100______________.85%
Texaco Ursa___________.85%
Shell Rotella__________1.00%
Kendall Super D3______1.18%

So, I guess I'll stick with the XD3. I know Rotella gets mentioned quite often, but it seems that it is not one of the best on this specification.

The approved list will save you considerable research. Note that in all cases "straight wgt" oil, 40wgt is the only approved oil for 2 cycle DD's. Multi-grade is a no-no. I would verify and validate that the most recent oil change used oil from Sky's approved list!

Technically, the Kendall Super D3 should NOT be on the list. I used some two oil changes ago because it was on this forum and cheap at Flamingo in Miami. Turns out it is not CF2, per Kendall and not DD kosher, per Kendall. They recommended some other Conoco-Phillips products, which I don't recall.

I went over to Florida Detroit Diesel and picked up DD Power Guard for a slight premium ($62 bucks a 5 gallon bucket a month ago). The NAPA on SR 84 near US 1 sells Rotella for around $52 a bucket.

Is 2/10 of a percent really worth worrying about? Most of those 'HIGHER ASH" oils have been used for decades without problems.

Is sulfated ash the only criteria in selecting an oil? Seems like there should be some certification of level of wear/friction that an oil can accomodate, and maybe viscosity stability, unless this is captured in the CF-2 rating?

Here's some info on the ASTM testing for CF2:

http://www.astm.org/Standards/D6618.htm

Unfortunately, you have to pay for the ASTM book if you want the complete criteria.

I am not sure of all the criteria needed to be CF 2, but the point here is that the Kendall is not rated CF2.

For 92 series they also have additional specs for Alkalinity and recommendations for Calcium and Zinc and Phosphorous.

I haven't looked at labels on other oils, but Rotella is labeled as meeting Detroit Diesel specs.
