Wobbly Seacock

Today, when I was down at the boat, my air conditioners were being commissioned and the AC guy said that the hose from the seacock to the strainer was good. He said it looked like the strainer wasn't afixed to anything and that it may cause the seacock to loosen up in its hole in the hull. Short of hauling the boat and taking out the seacock and rebedding, does anyone have any other suggestions?

It does not make sense. Hatteras uses true seacocks that are bolted thru the hull. They do not even need the thru hull fitting to hold them in place. The strainer will not loosen the valve unless it has been replaced by a thru hull fitting and a screw on ball valve.

Sounds like he was suggesting that you provide a support for the strainer BEFORE it causes a problem.

Those seacocks are bolted through the hull.

They're going exactly nowhere.

Now if it was a ball valve sitting on a through-hull I'd agree, but (1) you're not supposed to do that anyway, you're supposed to use a seacock, and (2) its not; Hatteras uses a proper seacock.

I was down on the boat last night and checked the seacock. All seemed tight to me. There was some movement in the strainer, but no movement in the seacock. Whew! Another boat buck saved to be spent another day.

If there is a hose between the seacock and strainer, perhaps the strainer was an add on and is separate from the seacock....in other words, its an inline strainmer with hose on input and output sides.....unless it's a 40 lber rolling around down there on loose hose, fugettaboutit it...Or if that is the arrangement, and it makes you feel better, tie it in place with some nylon line just for insurance....

You can also hard pipe the strainer to the seacock. Just use a hanger to eliminate any STRAIN. ws
