  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' SPORT CRUISER (1961 - 1965)
I spoke with the tech at Big Rock Propellers here in Morehead City for suggestions for new wheels. Here is the problem... I cannot find a realistic weight for the boat. The original brochures on Sam's say 11,000 lbs. I doubt this. It also claims 40 mph with 280 hp engines. Anyway, the tech told me to get an accurate starting point I need the weight, waterline, dead rise, and beam at the stern.

Also, any 34 C's that are running 454's I am curious about the dimensions of your wheels and what kind of performance you are getting.

Thanks!

I used 21,000 for mine with diesel but Steve 67hat34c got good #s I think he was 20,000+. He also has 454 I can check but I think Magic Hatt has 19 x 18 4 blades with his 454.
You are 1.5 to 1
So yes those weight #s are useless maybe they weigh them empty :p

I used to have a 1965 34' SC. Previous Owner told me that he had the weighed (wet weight) and was around 22,000#'s.

i had a 34' sedan that came in at 20,000lbs. 40mph? maybe if it was being towed by something going that fast.

67 34c weighed in at 20k full fuel full water and no gear. crusaders with 1.88:1 gears. props, crap i forget, have spares on it now. have the 4 blade set in garage they are 19.5x19. 3 blade set i think is 21x19 but not sure.
anyhow we are thinking the 4 blade set may be over propped, however we also may have some weak engine issues. with clean bottom we got 21k cruise at 3200 and 33kts at wot, 4200 which was a few hundred off. now we have not see those numbers since.

you have a sport cruiser and it may be lighter than the 34c, i also think the guy with the 1965 c was actualy a 34sc.

If i can remember i will look at my log and see if i wrote down the size of the 3 blade set which is currently on it. I plan to reinstall 4 blade set once they are fixed, bent one.

Our 1965 34' Sedan tips the scales at 23,000lbs. 20x20 4 bladed Michigans, 21K at 3800 RPMs with a really dirty bottom. I don't remember the WOT speed but we did reach 4100 RPMs with the trusty 330hp Chrysler 440's.

1967 34c. 454 indmars. borgs 1.91 ratio. 20by 20. i have 2 sets. it is happier with the old style that look like mickey mouse ears. it is happier yet when i run 18 dia by 20 pitch-my set for when the rest are bent. i only see 4500 rpm with the little props. the other 2 sets will run to 4000 or so.

i think you hafta drive it over niagra falls to hit 40 mph though.

I'm getting ready to haul my '64 34sc. w/ old crusader 454's I've done 24 kts @ 3300 or so. I'll let you know on the size and send pics. I just bought it and it's not "optimized yet" so I haven't really bothered to nail the speed/rpm thing yet. Anyone know where to get an "eyebrow"/visor for it-some genius thought it looked too retro and took it off! Drew

I repowered a 34 sedan from 440 chryslers to 454 crusaders a few years back. With 20X20 four blades and a 2to1 gear the boat did 18knots at 2800rpm's and as you say about 23 to 24 as the four barrels kicked in.At 4200 the boat did 31 to 33 knots each way.In my experience the old 34 and 41 hulls were by far the fastest Hatteras hulls. BTW/I am helping a friend with his 34C total makeover. He is talking about widening the bridge and removing the visor. Email me for his #.

To be fair, the marketing people will always quote the number which sells boats, which is their job. A more realistic figure is probably the 13,000-15,000 lbs in the official spec sheet at hatteras34 dot org, keeping in mind the generator and A/C were options, as were the DD's. Add another 3,000 for wet stuff and equipment, and the just over 20,000 lbs reported above is realistic. Since 40 mph is 34.8 kts, the above 33 kts WOT is not inconsistent.

I am guessing the factory flogged a stripped model/bare hull with Chryslers (which I recall are lighter than big block Chevys--I might be wrong) for performance tests, and the lighter weight stuck in peoples minds. BTW, the Hargrave book says 40 *kts*, if you want even more questionable information. The 34 hull was designed early 1961, the same year Bertram's Moppie won the NY-Miami race, and just before Hargraves designed Daytona 37 in response. A performance image was pretty important for sales reasons.

ps You asked for numbers: my 34C has 455s (yep) with 1.9:1 20x18. Since I bought it with one dead engine which is still under repair, I can report cruise of 0 kts (0 mph), and WOT at 0 kts (0 mph) at this time :-)

Erich, not sure of my weight 1964-34 DC With a alum hard top but with 5.7 efi ( 315/325hp) marine power engs and hurth 1.98-1 gear swinging 19x19 with a # 6 cup 4 blades at 3500 getting 25 mph and at 5000 getting 38 mph by my garmin.Thats with a freash bottom and running gears. We pulled out the 1994 carbed 454s rated then at 350hp.The prev.owner claimed 25mph at cruise. Not sure of the rpm but prob.around 3200.Those eng only turned 44 t0 4600 i believe.By the way still have the lefty and gear if interested.

Dan,

That is interesting becasue mine came with 534's, both in running condition. I actually was able to sell them on ebay. I now have an ultra clean white engine room sans engines but with new tanks, plumbing, eletrical, etc. I also get the same running numbers... OH, I don't even have any propellers on the boat!

I almost dread the thought of messing up that clean engine room with those blue Crusaiders I have sitting in the shop.

Capt Erich,

I bet we also have identical fuel consumption numbers as well. :)

I think I saw your engines on ebay, and I can sympathize about
what to put into you sparkling engine spaces. Just starting
that cleanup myself...

Best,
DAN
