Can someone please tell me why I need to pull the Racor filter lid off and lift the filter halh way out of the canister, then a big bubble, gurgle, and the filter fills up. then put the lid back on and the motor runs fine all day! if I don't do this, the motor will run for four or five mins and then starve for fuel. the fuel in the bowl is clean and the port side motor is not having this problem. Please help!!!!!!! if anyone can

My guess is that you have a little air leaking into your fuel system on that engine.

I remember being told to pour fresh fuel into the filter on the outside edge of the filter as well, primarily not to contaminate the rest of the system. Sounds like the system is losing prime after sitting overnight. If you have a lift pump check it, but i bet it's leaking air into the system somewhere on the low pressure suction side.

Check the gaskets on the filter.

yes thats what I've been doing. the racors are mounted on the bulkhead in each engine room at the same height. with the engine running it sounds like there is a air leak on the racor lid. its probly suction or I would see fuel being pused out. I'am going to clean and check the o-rings and see if there is dirt or cracks. but you are right when I fill the can on the outside the motor runs fine. they sometimes sit without starting for a month, don't like starting theengines unless I'am going to put them under a load or I'am giong some were.

This has been going on for a while. maybe couple of months. didn't have any problems before that. know work was perfromed pror to this problem.

If replacing the lid gasket and o-ring doesn't fix your problem I would pull the complete racor assembly and overhaul it. There are a number of places on the racor where air can enter and the overhaul is not too difficult, just purchase the entire "kit" for your model. Once completed it will help narrow (or fix hopefully) your leak search.

The air leak can be anywhere between the RACOR and the engine fuel pump, but since it'll run 4 or 5 minutes before it dies, it sounds like the leak is in the RACOR can, lid or connection. Make sure you have the small o-ring at the T-handle as well as a new big flat one in the lid. Check the can top where the lid gasket seals for dings.

You may want to check the vent on the hull. It could be plugged! Bugs or spider may have a nest.
