  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
It's me again - I think I will just keep this thread going as I uncover mystery after mystery on my 1972 48 Yachtfish with 8V-71Ns.
Item number 1:
This (I'm assuming) sensor (?) is attached to what I think is the oil pump or fuel pump. It is quite loose, someone has installed that yellow plate (to hold it on?) but it moves around quite a bit - it should probably be fixed.
The one on the other engine is mounted solidly and doesn't move.

Any help identifying would be appreciated.

Item 1 looks like a tach sensor. It's pulling RPM from a gear and driving an electric sender.

Item number two:
1000011792.webp
1000011794.webp
1000011800.webpThis one is I believe a Remy Delco voltage regulator or maybe a starter relay.. it is dangling in mid air, there is also another red wire that has popped out of the empty ring terminal. There are also two black wires dangling in the area with ring terminals. Sigh.
Before purchase this was behind the oil discharge placard that broken off by the mechanics during winterizing.
Google tells me it has to do with the alternator if it is a regulator - but I think this engine has a new alternator - so maybe this regulator is no longer used?
All help appreciated.

Thanks @Boatsb, I imagine it has to do with the electronic throttle controls then. Probably for synchronization.
The yellow bar is only on one of the engines, the tach sender is on both. Port side is nice and tight with no yellow bar. Starboard has that yellow bar but the sender rotates on its mount, I think the yellow bar was added to hold in the sender.
This one flops back and forth in the direction of the arrows.
The other one is held in only by the fitting I outlined with red.

I was assuming that fitting was broken, but maybe I'll hit it with a wrench tomorrow and see.
Any words of wisdom for item 2, before I throw in an item 3? 🤣
Thanks again!

We have a great boat, a 1972 43DC.
We bought it 6 years ago last week.
These are the first of thousands of such mysteries you will encounter.
Here is one I found yesterday, a zinc that has been jammed into the exhaust elbow for years and years (before we owned the boat, for sure.)

A pressure sending unit and a low pressure sending unit that dosen't seem to be connected??
Just an observation from the pix...

The spade terminals are connected.

How often do you change it?

During my ownership, no zincs have gone missing, this one has been in there since before I bought the boat.
I am currently rehabbing my raw water lines, and I am replacing the elbows where the water exits into the exhaust. First time I had had that fitting off, it is a 90 degree fitting... And that is what I found up there.

This ain't that complicated...in your picture it's got a wire running into it. So unplug it, start the engine, and then go see what stopped working. That'll be your answer. My guess is tach sender, but not certain. I've had to do this a lot over the years to solve minor mysteries like this, new boat = new surprises from prior owners.

That would be a great solution. Unfortunately I'm on the hard, with no power. :)

More digging has me figuring out that the Delco Remy is a model 841, which is a relay. Now I just need to figure out if it is still in use. 🤣

I use these to excite my 32v alternators from the fuel pressure switches.. They should be connected/mounted to ground (DCv negative) for them to work.
In your last picture, next to your thumb, you can see where it was mounted to ground (DCv negative) at one time before. Hanging in the air, I don't think they are doing anything for you.
I'll look for an old picture or take a fresh pic during my next visit to my boat.

Thanks, there is a ground wire (or two) dangling right in the area.. Thanks!

The wires usually would be close battery B+ in, B+ out to the alternator exciter. This shortens the wire to excite the alternator with less voltage drop.
The coil pull down voltage from the key switch or pressure switch. B- for the pull down coil is case negative B-.
Please trace these wires down and report.
And I'll send a pic and schematic of what it really does.
I think this may already been by-passed with a later self exciting voltage regulator on your alternators.
BTW;, your batteries overcharging??

On your tach sender oil leak, Is there a zerk grease fitting on the other side of the angle take off?
If not, try turning the fitting up.
I have a similar tach sender with two out cable outputs. Every couple of years I have to shoot in a shot of grease to stop any oil dribble.
I'll send a pic of this also next visit to mi my E R.

Thanks Ralph, all awesome intel. There is a new alternator on that engine! This is probably decommissioned in that case, I probably won't have time to trace the wires for about a week as I have other projects on the agenda for tomorrow, then a 6 hr drive home. Bit of a magilla!

The boat is new to me, I've only owned it through winter storage as I bought it in the fall. I'm like a deer in the headlights of a Mack truck! Lol.
I have a phone full of stupid questions to ask still! 🤣

I'm not sure there is any oil leaking from that sender - it is just abnormally(?) loose and held in with the strange yellow plate.
The port side engine's is mounted properly.
Port Side Tach Sender

As I'm googling around (it definitely helps to know what part I'm looking for info on!), I can see that the part that is loose is the "tachometer drive adaptor", the sender is the black part with the wires that attaches to the drive adaptor, correct?

Looks like an un-used sender screwed on to the back of a first sender.
I have plastic caps covering the back (out) of my first sender. I'll send pics of this also.
