Just for fun, what's your best irrational justification for our boating addiction?

  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
The one I keep telling myself is the Detroit Diesels won't be affected by the Electromagnetic Pulse bombs, and the boat is our portable fall out shelter for when we have to get far off land.

Also, Zombies can't swim.

Let's hear your irrational boating justifications, I bet there are some good ones out there!

Exactly why we have two matching RO systems, two gen-sets and always full of fuel.
Pantry is always full of caned and dry goods AND, an interesting armory inventory.

I call my preparedness; Project Babylon*.

Ready for Zombies, EMPs, Mad Max or a civil war.

I read the '59 book "Alas Babylon" when I was young.
Survival story based from around here
Required reading for my wife and step-son years ago so they may understand some of my tood..

We were pretty prepared during the Covid mess.
Amazing; None of us got any Covid..

Nothing irrational about it. I grew up boating. I love boating. And I love my boat. Won't ever be without one.

I didn't grow up boating, but my boat has been a multi-decade occupational therapy project. And not over, yet.

I think you are ready for the Somalian pirates! I watch the pirate videos every time I find a new one LOL.

Sounds like a good book? Maybe I should get it!

To answer the original question, Free Fish!

We will save money on Hotel rooms and Boat rentals.

Boats are like dogs. Even the worst is better than not having one.

Undiagnosed mental illness.

Buying the boat is an investment for our future financial security

When I was 10 years old I had to go in the hospital for surgery. While I was convalescing my grandparents brought me a model sailboat and a book, "The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone" (National Geographic Press). I was hooked on the idea of living on a boat, cruising, exploring for myself. I crewed for a neighbor in the Jack Daniels Regatta and a few other times on his sailboat, joined the USCG right out of high school, continued to dream. When the VA ruled me 100% disabled due to shoulder problems on both sides, I came to the dark side and gave up the sailboats... and fell in love with the Hatteras mythos. I've looked at some that mimic the Hats, and losing our first one to Ian was a gutpunch. We've put the boat life back on hold for our dog's sake (we love our dog), and I window-shop BoatTrader, Yachtr, YachtWorld, etc diligently.

In this forum I have found support, advice, and community. Thanks everyone... I miss having to deal with clogged AC strainers at 2AM but y'all help me keep the dream alive.

It's fun! I share it, it is the greatest lifestyle.
And, as you might have noticed it ain't cheap.

Keeps me out of bars and away from strange women……..but wait, the boat has a bar and attracts a lot of women……nevermind🤣

Keeps me out of trouble because having a boat means I never have enough money left over for a gambling or coke habit?

I grew up boating and have always loved it. My dad had a 58YF which is how I got into these specifically. They've always been a good bit more expensive than other boats in the same size and age range (or at least the nice ones are), so I basically tried some other stuff first (Sea Ray and a bunch of Chris-Crafts) but finally bit just the bullet and wrote the check. It's my favorite boat I've ever owned, and other than one very expensive incident that was an idiot mechanic who I hired's fault, not the boat's, it's been the most reliable big boat I've owned.

It’s a great investment that I’m sure will pay off any day now

My new signature line: "Boats are like dogs. Even the worst is better than not having one."
