I have to move the boat I just bought and I have to do 270 nautical miles to take it to its new home. As written in another post, it is an hatteras 50 from 1981 repowered by two Volvo Penta D11 670 in 2010. I would like to navigate at 900/1000 rpm to hopefully reach 9/9.5 knots and every two hours 15 minutes at cruising speed 1800/2000 rpm. Can you tell me what the consumption will be in your opinion so I can calculate the fuel consumption? I would like to receive as much information as possible so I can make an average with respect to your answers because it is not a coastal navigation.

900/100 rpm - 9/10 knots: l/h ?
1800/2000 rpm - 16/18 knots: l/h?

Probably somewhere around 250 to 300 slow and 500 to 550 fast.

Keep it at or below hull speed and a wild guess is 270 gallons + spinups. + 13 of those at around 15 gallons each = 460ish gallons.

The fuel flow difference between 9 and 9.5kts is going to be about 25/30% since your hull speed is about 9.2 kts. At or just below hull speed you should be burning about 9 gph so that would be about 270 USG for the trip. Add another 40/50 usg for a run up on plan at the end of day (no need to do it again very two hours)

If you re running the gen, figure just under 1gph so that would be another 25 usg for the trip

@pascal say : 9/9.2 kts - 9gph
+ 50usg for run up
total 330 usg for the trip

@bobbradly : total 250/300 going slow
and 500/550 usg going fast

@eddieclemons : 460 usg total

keep going

I have to agree with Pascal. His numbers seem about right to me.

Hello Pepino! Only just saw your post so maybe you've moved the Hatteras. We too are Mediterranean Hatteres owners. We have Volvo Penta D9's which are very similar to the D11 - The D11 virtually same engine with longer throw crankshaft. We have the 500HP version (also a D9 570HP) . I'm pretty sure your Volvos will come with the electronic displays which we have- so you can set them up to give fuel usage readout . Here's what we get in our heavy Hatteras 53 (lots of extras / bigger flybridge / bar / paserelle and full of personal belongings etc)
21 knots 169 litres per hour / 44.46 US gallon per hour / 37.17 UK Gallon per hour
16.2 Knots 108 litres per hour / 28,53 US gallon per hour / 23.75 UK Gallon per hour
9.5 knots 42 to 45 litres per hour / 45 = 11.98 US gallon per hour / 9.89 UK Gallon per hour
7.5 knots 22 litres per hour / 5.81 US gallon per hour / 4.83 UK Gallon per hour

With Europe's very expensive fuel ( 1.70 to 2 Euros a litre ) we cruise slow when we can and find the boat very economic to run- But do like to run up to 15 or 16 once a day

all the best!
