Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I had been putting off installing a good solar system because I needed it to be a 32v system and could not find a good 32v controller. The tech guys at Victron said theirs could not be set up for 32 v charging parameters but the Outback Flex Max controllers can. So I put in 3 400 Watt panels and the Outback controller. The panels are 45 volts each in series so come to the controller at 135 volts. Which works perfectly. Even this time if year I am getting 18 amps at 32 to 38 volts to the batteries.

That's great to hear. I gave up searching for a way to do 32v. Where did you find the real estate for 3x 400w panels? Also, why did you wire in series, vs in parallel? 18 amps doesn't so8nd like much charge current, unless you bank is on the smaller side...

May I offer a possible answer;

Solar panels can be wired serial or parallel. They can make a bunch of volts or make a bunch of amps.
The charge controller takes the incoming amps or voltage and converts it to the desired output volt/amp (Wattage).
So, V x A = W, what ever the panels provide in series or parallel will offer the same charge to the 32V battery bank.
Remember also, volts requires less in wire size.

Hi John,

This Australian company manufactures a 32v solar regulator called the Dingo.

I have two of them on my boat the past 9 years. Work perfectly.

Their website is dreadful, but nice people to deal with.

Part number is Dingo 2020N

Thanks Ralph you saved me a lot of typing. Thanks Scott, ow you tell me, but seriously I love Outback’s stuff so far am very happy with it so far. Sitting here at anchor at 7:30 am and already getting positive amps.
