Cruisair EBO expansion valve

I have a 1988 41C

She is a project and I'm working through pretty well everything. There are newish, never used Condensing units in the engine room. These are R417c, which is suposedly compatable with R22. The evaporator units are the Cruisair EBO R22 units. From what I can tell, this is a legit way to do this.

I'm trying to determine if the evaporator expansion valve is TXV, or piston type. and if its TXV does it have the strainer that can be cleaned. The expansion valves are obstructed, by guess is who ever did the install did not purge the residual oil from the line and it got all gunky.

The unit has the really gooy insulation all over it, so I thought I would ask before trying to pick that shit off

No expansion valves. Just jet/orifices.
No screens or adjustments.
When servicing compressors, I use RX Flush and nitrogen in a backwards flow to clean the orifices.

All R417 must be removed, then R22 used. You will find R22 works better than the slightly greener R417a.
Note; same compressor oil.

Just another testament to R22 over R417A. I have marine air units 16k & 12k spec'ed for the 417 blend. we evacuated all that and went with R22. Placed BIG labeling on the machines indicating R22 only. According to Ocean Options who sold me the units, all 417A machines were simply relabeled R22 machines in an attempt to comply with Fed restrictions. Find yourself a tank of R22 and hang on to it tight.

so I can just evacuate and push nitrogen through it backwards by feeding into the high side?

I may or may not have a can of r22…. The r417 compressors/condesors will be ok with this?

Push nitrogen thru from the low (big tube) side after a RX flush.
If the system has been open or discharged a while, Charge with nitrogen and draw down a couple of times.

Since your not an AC guy, good luck on finding your own R22.
