  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
I need to replace the rear seal in our Borg Warner 72C. What is the scope of work and can I decouple the shaft and push it back in the water. My understanding is:
1. Decouple Shaft
2. Remove nut from bellhousing
3. Slide bellhousing back to expose the spline and rear seal
4. Remove the seal
5. Clean spline and regrease
6. Install new seal
7. Replace bellhousing
8. recouple (connect) shaft to transmission

Thanks for any and all input in advance

Jim

If there is enough room between the rudder and propeller, you can push the shaft back. You will need at least 12". You need the room for a 1/2" air power impact gun.
Oh, you will need a impact gun with correct sized socket.
Oh, you will need about 100PSI and at least 90CFM for the impact gun.

Drain oil.
Make a bath tub under clutch to catch the remaining oil.

I recall there is an O ring in there somewhere to keep the oil from coming out the splines.

Big nut and coupler flange off of clutch out put shaft.
Pop out seal. Install one of the 2 seals that you purchased.
Once you figure out how to install the first new seal, remove this first new mangled seal and install second seal evenly and flat as you learned the first time.
Lightly grease the O ring and install.
Lightly grease the coupler and install.
Install new nut with impact gun.
Clean up area well and place a new oil-sorb towel down.
Fill clutch with oil (fluid) and take a long break.
After long break (overnight?) check for leaks and complete shaft install (maybe while checking alignment?).
Lets go fishing.

Brilliant advice on the second seal! Thanks

If not enough clearance for the suggested impact tool, go old school: hammer wrench-striking spammer-slugging wrench.

Commonly used on ships back in the day (prior-1950s) before those newfangled power tools.

The nut is recessed inside of the flange a lil. One of those off set wrenches.
Nut also has a nylon self locking ring.
Going to be a challenge with a spinning flange.

1&11/16 socket with a breaker bar is the plan. Less clearance required. All good input and greatly appreciated.

How are you going to keep the flange from spinning?

You can put bolts in the coupling half on the gear side and wedge it with a long bar to the stringer or floor of the boat.

Ouch.
Remember to file the faces flat when done.
