  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series II (1986 - 1991)
I was called out to a 54 today, and was told there was a coolant hose problem.

When I got there, I found this.

Connects heat exchager to engine

Stamped with Covington 892C266S

What are the chances of finding a replacement, and where.

Try calling Jimmie Mango in Branford CT. He's been the top 8v92 guy in CT for a long time. (203)488-6044

Cast iron? Coolant side of HE? A local block welding shop can heat it up and fix it.
Or a good cleaning and JB or epoxy fix.
Western Branch was the last owner of Covington. They may help on a re-engineering fix or kit.
Tap on J&T. Their still supporting the ole Detroits. Some of their packages were not far different from Covington.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Yes, it's on the fresh water side.

The owner would prefer new if possible. I thought about having it welded. If had luck with getting cast welded before. I'm a little concerned about how thin it may be. Looks like it may be starting to go in other places. I'll go ahead, and pull it off, and see how it looks from inside. I would think if i had to go the epoxy route, I will try and path for the inside as well as out.

I'm suprised Google came up with very little for Covington parts

Yes, bead blast the inside and cloth reinforce an epoxy patch on the inside. I have a few projects out there still running like this. It has to have pretty grey metal and not a dot or spec of rust. Apply epoxy straight from the bead blaster booth.

Sadly, I agree Covington web leads are near gone, vs many moons ago, lots of data and parts.

Here is what Penske was complaining about when he bought in and changed Detroit. To many shops taking away from the good Detroit name. He was worried about the future,, like this..
Who can the owners be upset with? Covington or DDC? Do they understand the difference? Not many do.
It's ancient history now, but when Penske took over DDC, There were warranty wars started and DDC won most.

It is good for the customer to find a good tech that understands these issues and can keep those sweet Detroits running. That tech is worth his (her) weight in gold when they can re-invent the wheel and she keeps running.
Again, who's problem is this? Not the techs, but who can be the well paid hero? Only the better tech.
Owners need to understand this also. Great engine. I'm a big fan. The marine conversion does matter. The tech that keeps you running??? Find the best and pay him well. The original old grey hairs are sadly buried or near EOL. God bless them.

Well said, and very accurate. Trying to find a good DD 2 stroke tech up in the Northeast is getting harder. And the ones still working are flat out cuz they're the only ones around.

Don't know if that part is covington specific or not, but the OP could see if J&T might be able to find that part. Just a thought...

That's all diesels at this point. I have a lot of friends with boats who have been waiting weeks or months to get things fixed. Either the shops are all backed up and on wait lists, or you can't get parts because of the supply chain shortage. The marinas around here can't keep mechanics on staff. It's a widespread problem. When you do get one, be prepared to pay for it. There's a guy I know with a cummins that's been disassembled for 6+ months and he's still out of commission. Things are bad in the labor market. I have a good mechanic who did my rebuilds who travels, I'm almost loathe to give his number out because he's already starting to get so busy that it's hard to get him to come out.

So can I go out and charge lawyer rates to fix your diesel engine?

FYI.....Looked like its and aluminum housing, and its pretty well shot. I poked a couple other holes in it while cleaning it up.

Yep, but it's on the coolant side.
Your not going to find one new. Finding a good used one,,, Maybe..
Re-invent the wheel with another marineizers equipment, or use what you have as a base for lots of epoxy and cloth.

Bead blast alloy lightly, coat all surfaces with epoxy to seal all and keep dry. You won't want any more corrosion to restart. TefGel all on assembly.

I have Volvo Zenith B18/AquaMatic 100s out there still running. Epoxy is our friend.

Even better, you can charge plumbers rates....

I always loved when people that make lots of money sitting in a cubicle bitch about how much the guy fixing their stuff is making.......
