  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' COCKPIT MY (1990 - 1999)
I'm refitting some shelving and electrical components in the cabin in preparation for hopefully a lot of salt water cruising. I notice the 12 year old component stereo stack near the main salon door as well as the DVD/blue ray players, etc through out the boat look brand new, with zero sign of rust or corrosion. Some powder coated metal shelf racks and a painted steel cabinet are also pristine after many years. But then again my boat has lived under a shed and mostly brackish water cruised locally in Galveston Bay for the last 7 years.
I plan to install Victron components (obviously fabricated with powder coated steel housings with tinned copper components) that are not specifically marine grade, but commonly used for marine application on even smaller boats.
So my question is am I crazy to consider non-marine grade, painted steel-cased LiFePro 48V (rack) batteries in a 6 battery 19in powder coated rack, installed in accordance with current ABYC standards. Installed in a walk-in closet converted from the 3rd stateroom/bunkroom on my 52CMY. I struggle to see why a Quattro inverter in a steel case is OK but i steel cased battery is wrongheaded. Am I missing something?

I know there will be strong opinions (ScottB for one) that will say stick with marine grade everything, but I'm having a hard time passing up the value of >30KWHs of power at a great price in a simple space efficient rack stack.
Will I be happy with rack batteries in 3 years regretting them for corrosion issues, uninsurability, or resale or all three?
Thx for your thoughts on this.

(Of course the way battery tech is changing, whatever we choose and despite the long life of lithium, we'll likely be swapping out for something better in 5 years anyway)

Look at the manufacturers compatability lists. They are not supported for a reason. I'd not take chances but then again what do I know.

For the 56 years I have owned Fanfare it has been my practice to replace any component with the best and most durable parts available. As a result the average viewer can't believe she is not a new boat. Also, these continual upgrades keep those onboard safe and me happy. Remember, this is a hobby, not an investment.

Jim, I just saw your boat on a you-tube videos we were watching about cruising the Ft Lauderdale canals and it looked really nice. John

I need to clarify. The traditional classic plastic cased battery is about the size of a Lead acid 4D (but 20lbs lighter)
Waterproof 48v EG4.webp

The option I'm considering uses that same lithium cells and internal BMS in a rack mount:

48v Rack Battery.webpEG4 batteries installed in Rack.webp

The Rack option upside is compactness and ease of install, as well as each battery has front mounted CB and status indicators. The down side is the the rack and battery housings are powder coated steel.

The plastic sealed and rack mount batteries are about the same price (about $10K for the batteries). The battery expected lifetime is 15 plus years normally but I would expect to replace them sooner (in 5 years or so) as new tech improves.

My question for those with more Hatteras experience than me, will I be fighting a corrosion battle with the rack batteries installed inside in a converted stateroom, and therefore stick with plastic cased sealed batteries? My local marine electrician installer is willing to go either way.
