  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
Looks like a 1970s maybe 53 foot yacht fish on fire in Fort Lauderdale right now. Is it anybody’s boat or anybody that knows the person? The address is roughly 1500 SW. 5th Court, Fort Lauderdale.

That's on the North Fork of the New River.

What a nightmare.

That just gave me chills. Hope nobody was onboard.

I hope so as well. Looks like it has been sitting a while given the sediment on the over hang around the bridge.

Yeah, she looks like a derelict.

Given the fire had bee extinguished at that point, I'm not sure how you could assign a derelict title to it. Unless they were squatters, that's hardly derelict real estate.

Not allowed to live aboard at private slips in FTL so chances are the boat was empty. Many slips behind homes are rented and not used by the property owners

Stated he turned the battery charger on & left.
Stated he lived aboard.

Well, stating the obvious, battery chargers shouldn’t start fires, and it’s a safe bet he wasn’t legally supposed to be there. This could turn into another Jonathan Selby situation but on a higher scale. I’m sure that name rings a bell for several of you.

Hopefully the guy carried at least liability insurance, or that could add insult to injury for him and everyone else in that particular area. At least it didn’t sink.

I wonder how many times they had to replace their saws/blades before they got those holes cut in that YF. :D

Price of batteries there are a lot of people cheaping out. Bad charger defective batteries can lead to a battery explosion.

Key word, “shouldn’t”.

Ive experienced battery explosions both on land and sea, but no fire.

I ve heard of batteries exploding and throwing acid but never starting a fire.

Battery chargers on the other hand can start a fire. modern chargers have better safeties and less likely to start a fire

Oh yeah hydrogen doesn’t burn

I'd be more willing to believe some hot wires lit something off. Otherwise, well, it's suspicious.

Many years ago, I was standing on the dock next to my boat having a conversation with another boater. I kept smelling something burning; like electrical. Finally, I decided to check my boat. When I went into the engine room, there was smoke coming out of my Analytic charger. I turned off the breaker and it stopped. I ended up buying a new one and that one has been on the boat for years without an issue, but what would have happened if I wasn't there?
