  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Opened my rudder packing glands yesterday and the packing was in good shape but it looks like the glands could take another layer of packing. It is standard packing and I have some of the gortex stuff, would you add a row of the gortex or get regular packing to add a row. Thanks, John

Go with the GorTex.

Could take or needs?

Additional packing is not going to be a benefit.

If it's got 3 rings and is not leaking why add more resistance and screw it up.

Maybe it takes four like mine.

If it is not leaking, leave it alone.

Thanks all, need to run out and get another package of the gore.

Well, took out 3 rings of standard packing and put in 3 rings of gore packing and no matter what I did I could not get the gland to screw back in with the 3 rows of gore. Clamped down tightly with 2 rows, then pushed in a third row as tightly as possible but could not get the gland to thread so removed one row of gore and put in a row of standard packing and it screwed right down, so that is how it is going to stay.
