I put a new diesel forced air heater in the port engine room and was working on getting the duct through to the master. I had to locate a hole from the guest stateroom into the air handler section outboard of the closet in the master. My electrician showed me a neat trick to locate holes on opposite sides of bulkheads or for deck penetrations. He brought two “rare earth” magnets with him. Taped one to the closet wall bulkhead to hold it in place temporarily and went with the other magnet to the bedroom bulkhead. Placed it on the wall in the general area and it snapped right to the other magnet. Took the tape off the first and we could move them around to locate the perfect place for the hole. Pretty ingenious method. The bulkhead in that area is 3/4" thick. He said he's used this method for penetrations as thick as 2 inches. Just thought I’d share in case you haven’t heard of this. He claims it works well going thru multiple layers include cored deck to locate thru hull penetrations.

I might try that trick on my date this weekend......

I almost went there with the first comment but I knew somebody would follow up with a good one. Nice job Ron

HOF meet Gutter....
Happy Thanksgiving ya bunch of ______....

I feel strangely at home here....

Not a new thing.

I use the fish tank magnets alot. They were easy to find.

Just not a good solution on ferrous metals.

Ok, back to the thread topic. What brand and size of heater are you installing?

Looks like a lot of heater for the money, how many ducts are you going to run and where. John

I put a duct in the floor of the galley, one in the salon and one in the master stateroom. The master stateroom duct was the hardest to run. All these heaters want good fresh diesel so I put a 12 gallon portable fuel tank on the side deck walkway instead of plumbing into the onboard tanks. Fuel hose runs through engine room vent. I fill it with a 5 gallon tank. Not necessarily pretty but definitely serves our needs and once winter is over it will be stored in our shed.

That is genius... good trick, thank you

I've never had any trouble locating... never mind.
LOL

Great idea. Going to have to get some of those, easier than my method measuring from known common reference points.

What's a heater?

Seriously though, the a/c tech said my bow stateroom a/c was working perfectly, but he couldn't seem to get the heat to kick on. We both just kinda' chuckled and changed the subject.
