Annapolis shooting

Terrible that the newspaper was shot up. 5 killed and more wounded.


News is all over it. I'm sure the politicians will be too. Just wonder how long until the gun control arguments start.
 
It's very sad. Hopefully some explanation of "the why" will be revealed.
 
What has our nation come to? Don’t give up your guns. If you do only the bad guys will have them.
 
Truly tragic. Prayers for those involved and their families. Hopefully we can back away from agendas and wait for calmer times to try to find solutions.
 
Ramos, the shooter, had a longstanding grudge against the paper. He had been convicted of harassment, and the Capital reported on that conviction. Evidently he had threatened the newspaper several times- there are quite a few reproduced Twitter posts from him under various aliases.

The entire thing is heartbreaking. This is a small town, really, more than a city. We know each other here, or we know someone that knows these folks. It is sickening.

The Annapolis Capital WILL be published today, Friday, 6/29. I have never subscribed to the Capital; in fact, I've never paid much attention to it. But I will do both, now.

As for Ramos, the death penalty is really too good for him, but I can't think of anything more apropos, so I very much hope he gets it.

As you wrote those words, did you even pause to consider that the originating post was focussed on the tragedy of the senseless and wanton killing of five innocent people?
Surely you could have waited before parroting the meaningless words of those who have no interest in pursuing an answer....ANY pragmatic answer.....to these repeated mass shootings.
 
He would be dead if there were armed citizens in the building. No need to prosecute him. No need to pay to house him.
 
No one likes these events. We can all agree on that.

Today I became a subscriber to the Capital. I also read the print edition of the paper. I was struck by several things:

1) they put out a newspaper. Evidently their "office" was a truck in the parking lot across the street. With one sixth of their entire staff dead and two more injured, they got the paper out. I used to be a journalist, in an earlier part of my life. I can't tell you how much I admire these folks. If heroism is doing your job when everything is turning to crap around you, they are heroes.
2) much of the paper was business as usual- sports, features, ads, national news. The front page was their own tragedy, but there was a lot more to it than the front page.
3) their editorial page was intentionally left blank. Virtually all their editors who would have written on it are now deceased. But there was a small note on it. I'll let you guys find that, and read it for yourselves.


With respect to the questions about firearms that are frequently raised in these settings, frankly, I am not up for that debate. This event occurred a little over 24 hours ago. Bestgate Road is still a crime scene here, with traffic diverted around it. I'd rather focus on our losses as a community- these were our friends, our neighbors, people we loved. And, in addition, the courage of those people who today, despite everything including the horrific losses of their friends and colleagues, got the newspaper out.

I grew up in an era where there was no Internet, and in which newspapers, big ones and little ones (like the Capital) were how we got our news. That, and radio, and later on, television. But newspapers were the main source of information.

The Annapolis Gazette, one of the papers that was the forerunner of today's Capital-Gazette papers, was one of the first papers to publish the Declaration of Independence. It was published on page two, as local news was always on page one. That is how old a paper it is. It has survived plenty, including the downturn in newspaper popularity, and it will survive this horror as well.
 
With regard to "the why", it seems he was accused of harassing a classmate of old. The paper reported it, and he was cleared of the charges. I believe this was the issue that led to the court battle that he lost.

It's no excuse for what he did but it would be interesting to read the articles that led to the lawsuit as well as understanding the charges.

No doubt he's a hot head.

Hot head? I’d say it runs a lot deeper than that.
 
He was not cleared of the charges. He was found guilty but did not serve jail time. He sued the paper and lost- twice.

I just got back from a week's vacation with my son on the OBX and up to VAB. I hadn't even seen any news on this shooting until I read this thread.


As for waiting, "before parroting the meaningless words", blah blah blah, how long did it take the media to bring up gun control after this or any other such shooting? Let me guess, that's different where simple respect for the victims and their families are concerned vs pushing an agenda. Perhaps if the media would stop covering these type things with such intensity (in the name of caring), there would be less of them. Funny how they won't talk about daily shootings in Chicago where gun laws are the most strict in the country, but I suppose that's different too.

Prayers for the victims along with their families and friends. Evil has always been a part of life and will continue to be.

But what if you don’t want to carry a gun, are you now obligated to do so? There seem to be more and more firearms of all kinds out there compared to when I grew up in the ‘50s, but we are any safer?
 
No one will be forced to carry. I believe those who carry should have training not just a quick course. I'm less concerned with their having guns than knowing how to use them properly.

You are not obligated to carry a gun but you have the right to should you choose. Probably not in Maryland.
