Doing my own work has paid dividends in the past when something goes wrong offhsore and being able to repair/replace in a short amount of time to get us back going b/c of my familiarity with the systems.
Buddy, you ain't just a whistling DIXIE!

Sounds like you will be using it quite a bit. The other thing everybody seems to overlook is the damn detroits seem to need 1500-3000hr overhauls, depending on how you run them. Sell the detroits now while they are factory fresh, and stick in some series 60s (even used).

Why the name Rusty Bucket? My real name is Rusty.

How about that. I'll have to tell you why over the phone. Simi- long story about my father and why I got the name. I'll send you a friend request and add my cell number.

While we're on the subject, why doesn't Cummins make an engine series that compete with (for example) the Cat C32s, MANs, and MTUS- in the 800-1400 hp range? Is there just not enough business to justify it? All their other engines are terrific.

Rusty as long as you realize you are putting back old technology- more noise, more waste heat, less mileage, less performance- go for it. As you said, they are paid for already. Of course, this IS the ideal time for a change on that boat.

Series 60s would be great. They are popular on the OBX with charter captains that run them day in and day out. They love them. I can't figure out why they stopped building them for the USA. I'm sure they are sold elsewhere.

Cummins QSK19,38,50 60 AND 98 sound like what your asking Jim.

Don't overlook the value of modern engines when it comes time to sell. You can sell the Detroits as is buy new cummins and it will be much easier to sell her later.

Qsm11's would let you walk around the engines to get to the batteries.

I'd not put Detroit's back in if i had a choice. Theyre old technology and heavy compared to the current options.

AMEN AMEN BROTHER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a Dr. degree in this area. The DD are not made anymore parts, people to work on them and if you travel good luck finding parts or people in the Bamahas. their days are numbered.
Qsm11 would add to speed about 5 knots and fuel burn instead of about 50+ gal a hour at cruse it would go to about 30+ - gal a hour. Of course for a pair of qsm11 you going to pay about 160.000 for the 700 hp boys.(not including gear) That is raw without or not including install. This time Scott is 100% correct
. note it will take the 700 boys to push that 52 the qsm11 does not come in the reman from cummings. You might find a pair of used one but i would advise to stay with new and get the warrenty from them.
TURNING THE PAGE
I had batteries in the walk way also i have four big boys and i have all four behind the engines out of the walkway. Had to add cable or make new ones to reach back to the power supply switch . Note the battery boxes were glased down had to brake the bottons out to move them.

I'd agree that the QSM's are nice, but they have had their fair share of issues as well. Pretty much all the newer technology diesels have been shown to have weaknesses. They are pushing a lot of ponies out of those smaller blocks and small problems can turn into big bills very quickly.

It's hard for me to argue with two new 8v92 reman engines and engine bays prepped for their entry, new mounts, exhaust all ready to go...etc

To each his own but we will be staying with the detroit iron on this project.

As to the old technology aspect... yeah, they are old, no doubt, but you have to admit they were advanced far beyond their time, roller rockers, common rail fuel system....etc. I kinda like the fact there there is no ECU or injector pump to deal with either.... The 8v92's are a proven solution that the boat is already setup for. To change at this point would be big $$$$$$ and also a big time consumer.

Good call Rusty

Good morning ! Since it seems that you enjoy working in your boats as much as you like using them, before you put the engines in, do yourself a favor an run a math excersise regarding how much you can get for your overhauled 8v92 and what would be the price of a set o reman Cummings. Just for the hell of it! Either way you are entering to make quite a project that can be fun. Putting in the old/new engine make sence from a $$ point of view but I bet that down the road you will get the itch to repower. So run some number and see the feasibility of putting in some new engines. That is what I would do. Have fun and welcome to the forum.

After spending 60,000 $ for a reman job with western branch and them providing a writen guarantee. For one year. It was a sack of
manure for one year call and it took weeks for them to come. SMOKE,OIL LEAKES AND YES EAVEN A CYLENDER LINER. THEY ARGUED ALL THE WAY ON EVERYTHING.
INJECTORS AFTER THEY REPLACED 23 TO 24 STILL PROBLEMS. I purchased 16 new ones at my expense and put them in at my expense. On & on a fight every step of the way.
Shall i continue ? After spending a lot of money which adds no speakable value to the boat. I am repowering .....................................................
I really like the boat and its sea keeping ability cosmedicely the boat is ok and i plan to enjoy it without wondering going to brake with them DD.

RE THINK IT Just remember what you spend doing rebuilts wont apply to a repower ever. I do not care what anyone says about the DD if you want to enjoy your boating without worry
for a long time repower.
Take a look at boats on the market those with DD and those with other engines are a much more ask.
sorry just speaking from my past two years experience.

Looks like a clean ocean you are selling: http://www.thehulltruth.com/boats-s...n-super-sport-sale-sportfish-convertible.html

Your ocean had 3208. If it had detroits 2strokes, you'd probably not consider DD on your new boat.

Good luck with it either way. At least you're in a Hatt now.

Yup, that is our 38. Somebody is going to get a great deal on a sweet and updated boat! Heading down this weekend to get more pics of the cabin and engine room.

We received word last night that our offer on the 52' has been accepted! The deed is done.

I hear everyone on the repower issue, maybe in a few years I'll be agreeing with ya'll, we will see. The repower is just not in the cards at this point of the game.

Congrats and welcome. Now the fun starts. Get some photos posted when you can.

Rusty, are you keeping the ocean owners website going?

Cummins QSK19,38,50 60 AND 98 sound like what your asking Jim.

Are these engines going in convertibles and MYs? If so, good for them. My experience with Cummins engines has been far better than the experience I had with Cats.

Rusty, are you keeping the ocean owners website going?
Yeah I'm sure I will. Really did it just to offer a service to Ocean owners. Was never a money making venture.

Just for fun these are still available as of today..
