Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
A couple of tips of the old hat...

1) Eric Jans, master carpenter, who built a new wooden support frame for Blue Note's winter cover. The original frame had finally given up the ghost, or wanted to, and Eric and I were able to copy it by laying out on my driveway and measuring everything. He had never seen the cover on my boat, and I did not even have photos of it (see recent hard drive crash and all photos gone) Nevertheless, the completed frame is sturdy, even looks nice, and fits the cover almost perfectly. There is a little fine tuning to do on the frame, when we take the fabric cover off in the spring, but it seems like it's going to work out great.

2) Jack Thuman, canvas maker, who cut and sewed the original fabric cover. It's still in excellent shape after at least 12 years, probably a lot longer, and is back on, nice and snug; we'll take it off in the spring and maybe have a few places resewn, but overall it's held up admirably.

3) all of us have various boating decisions we would make differently if we had them to do over. BUT- the decision to get a reusable winter cover for my Hatteras turned out to be one of the best ones I have ever made.

List for the winter and spring: fit the new aft spray rails I got from Tom a year ago. Also remove and clean HEs and aftercoolers. Those ought to keep me busy this spring.

Jim before you remove and clean the heat exchanger and aftercooler try the reverse flush with vinegar that Mike P posted a while back. A dockmate of mine and I did it on our boats, and it worked beautifully. Much easier than dismantling. Three hours and you are done.

Jim has cummins b seris and has to pull them to replace the gaskets and treat the hardware or he will need new coolers.

Right, I am going to pull them and take them to my friends who sell Cummins engines in Crisfield. (T&S Marine) They will send them back to me done and I'll put them back in. New O-rings, seals, etc. Ought to hold me for a few years, I hope.

Plus clean the air side of the after cooler and the only way is to take them apart.

Ouch. How often do you have to do that? 500 hrs?

I'm going to do mine this winter. Haven't been done in way too long.......but fresh water.

I think Tony Athens said the aftercoolers ought to be done about every 5y. Mine are overdue. I did the HEs myself a couple or three years ago, but I decided since it's going to make a mess in there, to just do all of it at once. I'm hoping I can do the HEs without having to drain ALL the coolant out of the engine- just enough to get the levels below the HEs. Advice welcome.

Use a big hammer!

Doing the aftercoolers and HE and changing coolant and any crappy looking hoses and touching up paint is all on my to-do list.

I'm a fan of rust-bullet paint on my RV. I think it will look nice in the engine room too.

Rust bullet paint?????? What's that?

My "end of season" thoughts are that I'm not going to have an end of season. My boat has been undergoing paint and other work since last December and I hope to be back in the water soon. So my season will just be beginning as you guys ends.
