  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I was hoping someone might be able to email me a copy of the original paperwork for a 53MY that shows the sling and blocking placement. I have a 1973 53MY and before I haul it I would like to know for sure, as the yard has never hauled a 53MY.

Thanks,

Jason

If you have the original owner's manual, it should show a graving dock diagram which gives you this information. Some boats will also have a marker on the side of the boat where each sling goes. On convertibles, the rear sling seems to usually go under the main aft bulkhead, forward of the shaft log entry point- obviously you don't want the sling anywhere near the running gear. The front sling would go at the convexity of the hull where it isn't going to slip forwards when the boat begins to come out of the water.

I haven't seen a 53MY hauled in a while, but my recollection is that it takes four slings to pick one up. I think they weigh about 80K pounds, but that's just a guess. You might want to send a PM to MikeP or SkyCheney- they may have photos of their boats being hauled which will be some help.

Sam's may have a copy of the graving dock diagram; if not, Hatteras Yachts may have it.

A yard that is getting ready to haul a boat that large and heavy needs to know what they are doing. If they don't, have them learn on someone else's boat, not yours.I think you would need a 50 ton lift to be safe.

Thanks for the reply. I have very little in the way of original documents unfortunately and definately no markers on sides, just fuel and water diagrams really.
I will check Sam's to see what they have tomorrow and yes the yard has a 75 ton lift and handles large boats but I want to be sure.
I send the pm's as well

Thanks

I've only pulled mine on elavaters so I can't help. Once you fine out please share. Do you have stabilizers? That would make a difference and the marina would need to know they are installed.

Thanks SeaEric. That shows me the sling placement so I will put markers on the boat in those locations. Anyone have pics of one on the hard on blocks. I'm sure that as long as the blocks are under the bulkheads they will be good, but I'd like to be sure where the original placement is supposed to be.

Thanks again all

Photos, worth more than a thousand words, easily. I would still contact HY and Sam's for the graving dock diagram, you really should find it if you can.

I will be contacting them tomorrow as I am coming out next Tuesday, so I have a week to get the information. I will share anything that I find and if the have paperwork and diagrams, I will be sure to post copies.

I am wondering if the black arrow marks on my gunwales are the lift marks? 1985 61MY.

It depends on whether they point bow or aft. :)

Here are a couple of pictures with my 53 blocked up.DSCN1397.webpDSCN1399.webp

That is one heck of a cover. What does it weigh? Seems it would be nice during the off season. Is it easy to install?

Thanks Gary. This helps me a lot as I'm not sure if I can get the original documentation. I am waiting for Steve at Sam's to get back to me, so fingers crossed there.

Thanks,

Jason

Here's one where she's blocked.

The cover was made in 4 sections and they zip together. You can see the vertical seams. The heaviest section probably weighs around 70 lbs.
Attached is a picture of the framework (basically a bunch of 2x4's connected to various fittings made out of 1-1/2" thick plywood.

Those 53 MY's (Classic & ED) sure are pretty. Probably one of the best designs of a MY ever done.

This is the graving document I have in my owners manual which shows the lifting points. My boat is a 1972 53MY, although for some reason on the diagram is dated 1/1974.

The framework that holds my winter cover is similar to that- mine is in three pieces, although I think the center one weighs more than seventy. We are making a new support structure for it this fall, modeled on the old one. If you have any closeups of how you did the joints, I would like to see them. I think it is more stable than the arrangement mine was originally built with.
