  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
Hello there-

After searching here for holding tank layout/plans/options/schematics I didn't find what I was looking for - how the two tanks (in my case) are plumbed together and how they should operate? I have the FWD center line tank, and a STBD tank OBD of the dinette. 1 pump out fitting on the FWD deck.

I don't have a problem yet that I know of but haven't figured out how the STBD OBD tank is supposed to drain into the FWD tank, and therefore how it gets emptied when pumping out. The MID and AFT heads seems to be routed to this tank.

There are lots of other features to this system I do understand and have left out those details out of my question as I understand those features (through hulls, routing valves, overboard pumps, etc). I have sea water fed Raritans (all work great).

BTW this forum is one of my favorites, great info, that's why I'm asking here and now since I can't call Hatteras until Monday and I've a boring day at work on Saturday!

Would Hatteras have and send me the delivery layout as a 4th owner of my hull?

Added a picture just for the heck of it too.Underway 8.webp

You sure you only have 1 pump out fitting? I have 2, one for each tank. I would check the routing of that hose as my two tanks are not connected.

Hi Johnjen,

Yes that is what has me posing the question. I only have one pump out on the FWD deck, port side, see pic. Where are yours located?

I think in checking the pumps and hose routing I can pump each tank overboard individually, but I haven't tried to yet. I am wondering if I need to (or can) pump the STBD OBD tank to the FWD tank and then suction out through the single pump out. It'll have to wait until I get home Monday.

There has to be two pump out deck plates. Both should be located on the starboard side on the toe rail. The center head empties into the tank below the dinette and the forward and aft heads empty into the forward holding tank. If you only find one out let the prior owners may have shut one of them down for one reason or another. Can you follow the pump out hose to the deck plates?

Maybe the pic isn't coming thru right on my phone but I don't see any deck plate for pump out in the pic u posted. I have 2 on the Strb side toe rail as Seven said. I would follow the hoses to make some sense of it.

Oh sorry I just caught the pump out you were talking about. By hat is in a weird spot, and nothing like mine. Must have been replumbed at a point in time.

I agree - every 1510 hull I have seen (53/58) has two pompous (thanks, spellcheck!) I mean PUMPOUT fittings, one for each tank, located on the starboard side just forward of the railing "gate" on the gunwale. Can't imagine why a PO would have eliminated the OEM fittings and replaced them with a single fitting in the foredeck - which, as noted, would have required some sort of internal plumbing to be able to switch between tanks for pumping out.

Certainly could have been done that way but don't know why...UNLESS the PO used the other waste tank for fuel which is not uncommon though usually the forward tank is the one converted for fuel.

I'll go to the boat this evening, but I can verify that there is only one pump put, FWD deck Port side, and nothing in either L or R toe rails. I'll give it a crawl and report back on the plumbing, thx!

Maybe a head was replaced with a Vac u flush or a sanitizing unit.

Check to see if the starboard side toe rails do not look like they have been patched. If you also look behind the sette you should see the tank and fill switch. You may be able to see the hose going up to the toe rail from there. By the way, nice looking boat.

Question answered-the stbd side tank is not in use on this boat. The tank top fittings are all capped and the mid/aft head plumbing bypasses the tank. I could see this once I pulled the access cover under the settee. You couldn't see this by looking obd over the top of the port batteries. A good slap on the side of the tank verified that it was empty too. The boat at one time had a vacuflush system and they must've reworked everything when they went to maserating Raritan heads. The toe rails if they ever had pump out fittings don't show any evidence of them any longer, so all is well. Now I'll be thinking of what to do with a big empty tank in that area! Here's a few more pics: Lower Helm, Dinette and TransomThanks for the replies too. On to other tasks.
