Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
Was looking to get quotes on refinishing our Fighting and Helm chairs on our 45 Hatteras. They'll need fully sanded and varnished as the old vanish is wearing through and bubbling up in spots. Does anyone know, or have any recommendations of someone in Ft Lauderdale area? I had one guy give me a quote and it's borderline worth buying two already refinished used Helm Chairs and a Fighting Chair for what he wants. I know it's a lot of work, but just want to do what makes most sense money wise.

Thanks

Tony

If their that bad they need all the hardware removed and stripped to the bare wood and built back up with multiple coats of polyurethane or awl grip. Easy 40 hours or more. The worst part are the ladder backs.

I Know it's a PITA, and that's what makes me wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to go to Dania Flea Market and buy New/Used ones. The metal is all good and the chairs function as they should it's just the finish is old and it shows.

Check with Release is Savanah, they refinished ours and did a great job. Or, they usually have refinished traded chairs available and might even take yours. Would check with Bluewater and Scopinich also to see what they want to refinish, etc. Yep, it's a lot of work sanding the ladder backs, and sanding, and sanding.

I'm in the midst of refinishing one myself. It's great therapy. I'll take the old ones off your hands. It's certainly not a way to make money when you can get mint ones for the same cost as refinishing the wood.

When and if I get rid of them I will be sure to let you know.

Google 'furniture stripping Fort Lauderdale'. There are several around. The prep is the real work, and a dip in a strip tank will make it much easier. Then sand and hang the pieces and start varnishing

I did my ladder back and it took about 4 weeks just for the sanding and recoating of the varnish.

It looked so good it stays in the garage until needed.

The dip and strip outfits might eat the glue and places where the wood is plugged. Could end up with a bunch of pieces of wood slats
