I am contemplating doing an upper rebuild on one of my 1985 671TIs. Thinking of putting in new sleeves and pistons and having the head reconditioned due to age, hours, compression and smoking. I am looking for advise on 1)kit prices 2)which manufacturer 3)changing to 19:1 compression and 4) what the price range per hole should be from my mechanic. The turbo, blower and heat exchanger are fine.

Thanks John

How many hours? And why are you not putting in main and rod bearings at the same time?

very good question Sky! If you do it and do not use after market parts plan to spend about 28000$ when you go to for your first boat ride. Good luck.. Do not send the heads to a local machine shop if they are origional. There have been a lot of updates and be sure to get the new valves they have a indent in the middle top side they are the latest ones. I did a pair in my 45c 3 years ago. These are some facts i remember them.

If you're doing the kits do the whole job. Most of the work is done since you'll already have the engine apart.

You can get a rebuilt 3/4 head from powerline components for 2,400 plus core and shipping. It's a complete U 4 valve that only needs injectors to be plug and play. And others have mentioned, if you're doing cylinder kits, you should do the main and rod bearings as well. The parts are cheap, finding the right guy to do it is going to be your challenge. Everybody and their brother sells rebuilt kits. Diesel pro, Diesel Parts Direct, Powerline Components, etc.

This.

Thanks for the input! 1985 Detroits JT, 1650 hours. Will do the main and rod bearings. The head is the later version with the dog bones.

Just did the same thing to one of my 6-71's. It droped a valve and the rest is history. Turbo replaced and a total in frame. Mechanic shop cost 95 dollars per hour with me as his helper. I have an 84 36C with absolutely no room to work. The job was a total PIA. It was a 3 week job. Mechanic said the engine was good for plenty more hours but the valve did a number on the head and piston. Core was not usable so the head was around 3600.00. We are about ready to fire her up, just a few minor item to hook up and it should be good. Havent seen the whole bill yet but I figure around 20 grand. Going to have the mechanic do a tune up on the second engine he is figuring thats what may have caused the problem with the droped valve. If you are not haveing any major problems like clacking or banging coming from the motor do yourself a favor have the timing checked and replace the injectors. If it smokes alot pull the pre cooler and clean it. Those engines will run for ever. If it wasnt for oil and oil smoke blowing out thr exhaust the engine ran fine.
Good luck.
