  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
Hi guys as all Hats my 52 has a fire hole in the engine room door. It takes away from the cock pit looks. I am thinking about glassing it up and painting. WHAT IS THE DOWN SIDE???

no way to check for fire without opening it or to put an extinguisher into the space from outside.

I know all that but the vents in the side are as big as the door itself.

You cant see through the vents

can't access the vents while away from the dock and still can't see in there. I think you've run out of projects if this is what you're looking to do.

I wish I had the port holes. I'm thinking about putting cameras in both engine rooms so I can view them while under way. Don't take them out or cover them up.

By the time evidence of a fire can be viewed via the portal, you"ll have so much smoke pouring out of all the engine room penetrations that the little window will be a moot point. Opening any access to the engine room will only annoy the fire and encourage it to grow, not to mention exposing you to toxic / deadly gases.
Maintain your engine room fire system and pray that it works when the time comes. If it doesn't work, the possible consequences of any attempts of "heroic intervention" are not worth the risks.

Not all Hatts came with this access port. My 1985 does not have it and my friends 1978 60C does not have it. If you don't like the look, glass it up. I see no problem. You have the emergency pull for the CO2 bottle. That should be sufficient.

I may be making a mistake. But today we are re doing the non skid in the cockpit and closing up the so called fire hole. I got cameras in the engine room and fire retard.

That fire thing is like trying to plug the hole in the Titanic with your thumb.

Another lesson learned @ Yanks Boat Yard.

My Hatteras was built before the discovery of fire, so I installed one of these in the ER door.

I would not dream of taking anything away that allows for fire detection.
Just my 2 cents.
