I bought this one new. I did an electronics trade with a guy and got an extra one. I put the new one up because I thought it was gyro stabilized. (Model G4-hp). Turns out you need an extra gyro box that didnt come with the trade. Any way, I left the G4 up and have an extra.

do you still have this one for sale? Is it a high Def model? What year did you purchase it, and is it stabilized?

It is not hi def. in order to get hi def for directv you need to get the HD7. $9000+.

I bought it in 2007. It does not have a separate gyro stabilizer but it does not really need it.

I've got the same unit on my boat, 4hp. The unit works fine, in all conditions, at anchor or at sea. When I got the boat, I started removing inop and outdated equipment. I identified the gyro control box mounted under the upper helm. It wasn't even connected! I saw used ones on eBay for giveaway prices, so my old gyro control unit resides in the dumpster. The "but" of the 4hp is that with some minor additional equipment, it is "capable" of HD, but the only satellite you can hit with the 4hp and only compatible receiver (D12?) doesn't have HD programming! I believe the purpose of the gyro control unit was to be able to point the antenna at a different (HD?) satellite. One last note about the D12/4hp set up is that you have to use the AV output of the D12 to the TV, not the coax. When mine dies, I'm going with the SWM capable TV5 system, but I'm inland and near coastal gulf waters.

The tv 5 is pretty cool with the swm8. I'm installing one this week. If I had a choice though the hd7 is far better. Remember the tv 5 is single band. The hd7 dual.

I did just sell this unit. Shipping tomorrow. FYI it did work very well in almost all conditions. To get HD you have to go to the HD7 unit. $8900.

Thats true with direct TV as they have their HD in the KA band. Other services may have HD on the KU satelites. YMMV, Batteries not included, do not try this at home.

I get HD channels with Dish Network and the cheapest Intellian I2. Might be worth looking into instead of spending $9K

One reason I like the TV5, although it is KU band only, is the comparable receiver allows up to 8 baby wireless receivers.. I've got 4 staterooms, Salon, and flybridge TV locations So the ease of setting it up is appealing. From what I have read, the Ka band offers a higher data transfer rate, and is kinda the new kid on the block. But for right now, I'll stick with my low def 4hp, works great and my eyes aren't that HD anymore anyway.

Dish has a problem establishing signal with some intellian systems where it sometimes takes a long time to lock. Kvh has not had that issue.

I believe I resemble that remark...

I bought a used M7 at a really good price and got excellent Direct TV except for network channels as far south as Georgetown in the Exumas. I was able to get the networks through a regular type antenna there though. I woulld have been a pretty POd fan not to have been able to watch my Hawks win their 3rd Lord Stanley's in 5 years!

Wrong forum etc. but seems the right people are here to answer my question. At present I have no antenna for my two TV's. Not surprisingly I get a very limited choice of channels! I'll either have to learn Spanish or become a believer to enjoy them.
Initially I looked at this thread with a view to buying the satellite system but can imagine as a non resident it's going to be a pain getting signed up with a service provider.
I was impressed with Peters comment about watching network through a regular antenna. When in the Bahamas I don't get anything.
What antenna is required on a boat to pick up terrestrial tv signals? What do you use Peter?

this is very crude, and i learned it from a sail boater. at the pass christian municipal harbor they don't offer cable, he is a liveaboard and wanted to get some local channels. he used a piece of stainless steel wire and wrapped it between two bows on his bimini top. he used the two ends and hooked one to the center wire and one to the shield wire of his cable going to his tv. not the best looking setup but it worked, he got 42 channels including channels from alabama and louisiana.

In the four or five years that I've had the Intellian, I've never had any problems. I just turn it on and it works.
