No doubt the distance to the Gulf will be shorter via the Mississippi, but my guess is that by the time you're coming up on the confluence of the Ohio, the Tenn-Tom route will be looking pretty good. There's a whole lot of nothing on the Mississippi between Alton, IL and the Ohio, but I've never been south of that point on the Mississippi. You had best check the next available fuel stop for that route, but if you do run out of fuel, you'll still make it to New Orleans.
