Inquiring minds want to know....best for overall longevity is key, top speed not so much.

Best fuel economy at 7 knots, and general replace/rebuild costs per engine.

Also what is ride like in a beamy sea with stabs at 7 knots? I know they like to run faster than that.

Can't pick one that is best for everything you listed but the 3412 Cats would be good for most. They'll win for longevity and decent economy. 7kts is too slow and almost all of the engine options would be about the same at that speed. Hull speed is roughly 10kts. The Cats will cost 3-4 times what the detroits will cost when it's time for a major but they'll also last 2-3 times longer if you run hard. Run the Detroits at hull speed and longevity won't be an issue for any of these engines. If you want speed and longevity then the 1800HP 16V2000 Detroit/MTUs are the way to go. Given your post ID say a 12V92 boat would be best for you. Keep in mind a Cat boat will cost you at least 100K more than a Detroit boat and the MTUs will up at least that much more over the Cats. Cat and MTU boats are also later models so you could be paying twice what an older Detroit boat would sell for. Ride is excellent even at slow speeds with the stabilizers on. Boat likes to run in the 20kt range. There the ride is exceptional.

THKs boat I am looking at has mtu 8v 396s.one rebuilt, one with 3960 hours.

I am guessing 100k for a new/rebuilt motor?

Very reliable and efficient. Insanely expensive if something goes wrong. I've seen two boats that needed one engine replaced. Both times I was told about 250K for a used rebuilt one plus the cost to R&R. You might be able to rebuild one for 100K but I'd research that first. If they're in good shape now you may never need to do a major. Price the W5 service. That's coming up and it will be pricey if you do it. Cost for the W5 is more than a Detroit overhaul.

The 3412 is probably one of the best diesel in that size range (1400hp ) We have a pair of 3412Es in the boat I run, they re now 12 years old with 4500 hours. In thae past 7 years / 3000 hours, we ve done Nothing but routine service every 1000 hours, 4 impellers a fuel cooler and a starter. From the records original owner never had to do anything either

Thanks Pascal and Saltshaker. $250K for one rebuilt engine is indeed crazy.

Imagine what a new one would cost.

Or maybe they only sell rebuilt ones. New ones are SO expensive no one can buy them. They are available only as used.

LOL

I don't think they make them anymore. The new MTUs are great engines but all new big marine diesels are expensive.

The 3412 cats have a proven record. Maintenance is a less than MTU's.
