1987 40 double cabin

My 1963 Hatteras 34 SC is now long gone. Looking at a 1987 40 double cabin. Any problem areas to look out for? Has 350HP Crusaders. What would be the burn per hour at trawler speeds? Current owner claims he contacted Hatteras regarding ethanol with the problems w/glass tanks. They said they had a special coating and unaffected. Is this true? Thanking you in advance for any feedback.

Bob, One of forum members has a 1989 model, 40 DC with 3208 cats that he is looking to sell. I think you can get a good deal on it as he is moving overseas in a month or two. I'll try to call him so he can post with you.......

1987 should be okay re ethanol. I have heard that the resin was changed sometime around 1985 or 86. But a call to Hatteras with the HIN would probably be worthwhile if you get serious.

I still have our 1985 43 on the market. The other contract fell through. I can't promise a great deal but it is one great boat. Turn key that we spend 8 months/yr living on. Just came back up from Florida, now in SC. Hate to sell it but might just keep it. We still need a place to live while we are working the nuclear plants. Also, I have 3208's which burn 3.5-4.0 gals/hr at about 7 kts. Look it up on yacht world.

Pate...Did look it up. Beautiful boat and appears well maintained. Unfortunately too rich for our blood. We have 3 dogs that go everywhere with us. The 40 having the Marquipt boarding stairs along with the interior layout is more friendly for them. Thanks for the offer.

Bob, we have a marquip boarding ladder as well. I have heard some people (owners) call all 40-43 models stair masters. Everywhere you go you have to climb steps. Marquip stairs are not a picnic for dogs either. I've seen boarder collie and hoarding dogs jump around real good and could navigate without any problems. Small Winnie dogs would be stuck. I had a friend with a 1990 40ft my and his had stairs every level too. A 53 flush deck might be better too. I do know all the boats under 53 have steps leading most every different room.

Pate...Showed my wife the pictures of your boat and she is in love with a few of your decorations. Is it a tile you used on the wall of the galley area? What are the signal flag decorations under the windows in the main cabin made of and where did you get them? Were the signal flag pillows on the aft deck bought that way or made? Years ago my wife made signal flag curtains on a white background for our trawler. They too were incredible looking. Thanks, Bob

Have 1988 40 MY with Crusaders. No ethanol problem. I believe Hatt told me that 1987 and up had no problems when I contacted them 8 years ago when I purchased this boat. 8 to 9 knots under normal conditions 7 to 8 gallons. 16 to 18 knots 35 gallons. Original owner did the great loop in this boat in the early 90's.

Great boat. Have not discovered anything unusual in the 8 years I have owned. I did replace every hose, clamp for all systems when I got the boat. The head hoses are a real PIA to replace but well worth the effort. Over the years most systems have been replaced or rebuilt.

Still going strong with 700 hours on rebuilt original motors ( done at 1300 hours). I know it is not diesel but it sure is reliable and easy to maintain by an old gearhead.

I hope to continue enjoying until I decide to quit boating.

Yes, tile backsplash in the galley. The boat was decorated by the previous owner. We liked everything so we didn't change anything. The blinds are custom from somewhere and prolly cost a fortune. The flags are custom wooden blocks hand painted. The pillows were all made and bought from north myrtle beach canvas. I don't know if he is still in business. I wish I could claim we did everything but can't. Good luck on yours.
