  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Depends on the configuration but yes they fit. Never heard of a 360HP 3208. Looks like a 260HP one. Scrod has them in his 36C so he can shed more light but I recall the 375HP and higher engines being too tall. The cost to get those engines out, shipped and then deal with the boat may negate any deal in the package. How much is a pair of remanded 370HP Cummins 6BTAs?

They are 355 or 375 with that aftercooler

Sold a mid 70' s 36 with 3208n And they were a bit tight. I'd not be putting them in myself. The cummins reman or a pair of RTO s would be a better deal. Also consider Yanmar if you can find some small 6 cyls in good shape.

You need to look at cost and results. I quoted a pair of 480 hp 6.7 cummins with Transmissions late last year in the 70 to 80 range.

That was all new latest technology with controls and screens.

I think it would be cheaper to buy the 38 and complete the restoration than to buy the power and try to cram it into a 36. Captddis is right, they're either 355s, or 375s. You will have clearance issues with the aftercoolers.

i know of a 1969 41 sf repowered in 2004 with cummins 6b 315 hp and gears that could probably be bought in that same price range

I had 555 V8 Cummins in my 36 before I repowered with the B series and to say it's tight with V8's is an understatement. IMHO if you're going tackle he huge job of a repower project do it right and go with an inline 6.

Just to show you how it fills up the space:

And I don't even have the generator in there yet.

Plus wasn't your floor raised?

Put the genny in the V berth. I couldn't fit between the engines if I had to. thats worse than my 41 with the 8v53's

Yes, to clear the turbochargers. But that's because of the step down of the transmissions. A straight-line transmission like an MG506 would lower the back of the engines and the floor could be original height, however if the engines had aftercoolers you'd be back to the same problem.

The ruler says the generator will fit athwartship against the aft bulkhead. One thing I finally did was switch to South Bay strainers. I determined that once the generator goes in it would be about impossible to get past it to service the onboard strainers.

That helped make some room behind the engines.

It also, between strainers, hose and the water they hold, removed 50 lbs from the boat which will help slightly offset the added weight of Genny-fer. I've also relocated the battery switches and replaced the battery cables since that picture of the engines was taken which helped clean things up and improve serviceability.

All of those things pick up a couple of inches here and there, but it's never going to approach comfortable in there.

My genny is at the back bulkhead and it sucks to work on.

I'm sure mine will too. Not too many other choices though. The admiral complained enough about the Bridgport in the V-berth. I don't think she'd like a generator screaming away in there.

A pair of reman Cummins 6BTA's 330hp with gears are $45k and either FOB Maryland or Florida.
Then I hear I'm into about $20k to have them installed.....that's IF I can find somebody in the NE Ohio area to even do it.....

The other issue, besides height concerns, is the weight difference. Several have told me that these 3208's weigh at least twice my 454's and that my swim platform might end up under water!

My boat was built with (I think) Jezus Chryslers and was repowered with 3208s. When we stripped the bottom we could see where the original waterline was. The stern had remained about the same, but the line at the bow was about six inches higher.

Remember, Hatteras offered the 36 with 1106/3160Ns which was the predecessor to the 3208. It's not that they can't be made to fit, but there are better options in more modern power that make it worthwhile to consider the extra investment.

$20k install. Did that quote come with a jar of Vaseline?

That's about 2x what I think it would cost plus the aft bulkhead repair if needed.

Yup....$20k.
But I cant even find somebody to even talk to me about doing the install......

Back in 98 I paid 33K for my 270's with ZF 220A gears. Then I think about 3500 for my "weed whacker" Entec genny. Final bill was total of 52K overall. You will have engine beds, fuel lines, big exhaust work, shafts, props, fuel filters, etc. Not a small job by any means but of course you don't want to get hosed.

I will say that in the end the performance outweighed the fuel savings (which is huge) and this is money well spent if your going to keep the boat. I went trough every imaginable scenario on how to go Diesel. In the end the only "shortcut" I took was gambling that the 270's were everything the 330 and 370 HP's were with equal torque but limited to lower RPM's. I was right. And I will say the 330 will do the same for the 36.

If your going to keep the boat and do this for yourself I recommend getting mechanical fuel pump Cummins or Yanmars. I am at 17 years old and just did a head and a turbo and I am glad I am paying Cummins prices as apposed to Yanmar prices on these parts.

Ad the "weed whacker" genny is gone, replaced by a 3 cylinder 1800 RPM. Don't ever get a 3600 RPM genny unless your very hard of hearing.

GOOD LUCK ON THIS!!!!
