  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I am so fired up about my new acquisition of a 43' 1977 Hatteras double cabin it is about to get me fired from my job! Any one out there that can offer any advice or better yet, walk the decks with me in Fort Lauderdale, all the better. My issue is that after pumping out the engine beds of God knows what, I have smelly belly, or stank bilge. Any feedback is appreciated.

I'd start with looking at the sanitation systems. And see if you have water in the keel.

Start by flushing out the stale bilge water. It smells the same as sewage and you might spend a lot of time and effort working on the wrong problem. try the easy way first. I replaced all my sewage hoses thinking this is what caused the bad odor when later to discover the stale bilge water was the problem.

Which bilge, ER, Forward or Aft, or all. As stated, I would start by thurough cleaning (and painting if you are really ambitious). Don't forget to clean the shower sumps. I had issues with lack of circulation in the forward and aft bilges so I added radon fans (low wattage AC continuous duty fans) to push air from those areas into the ER and out the ER vents I presume. This was a 100% improvement as it keeps air circulating in all 3 bilges. They are very quiet and use very little power. I just finished replacing all of the head hoses during winter storage. I now have no detectable "Hatteras" smell on board. Here is pic of forward fan.

The aft fan plumbing was a little trickier. Both fans pull air from near the shower sumps.

I second everything all the forum members will advise plus add Odoban available at Home Depot to your bilge and and any place water can acumilate. I use it in all of my bathrooms at home and use the cake dispensers under the seats of my cars and the air returns of our air conditioning system. It's a great product. I like the eucalyptus scent but there are several to choose from.

I had sorta the same problem. The vent to the holding tank had somewhat come off. However i met a very nice couple in Palm beach he told me to put clorox in the holding tank. What can it hurt i put two gallons in after pump out. It did not kill the oder completely but it is quite a lot better. When i got home with my new purchase,I got to wondering what a 50 /50 mix water and clorox would do to the bilge. Do not do that it will smell like a chain store bathroom for about a month!

You are all on the right track. I sucked out the engine beds, and all surrounding areas. Did it the hard way with a shop vac. I disposed of the oily water properly at a recycling center. So far, and I am almost done, the total yuck removed is in the 120 gallon range! Some had the distinct smell of rotten eggs, the rest was oily water (with Detroit 671's I don't wonder why) and the previous owner who recently passed away at age 91 most likely did not even know there are hatches under the salon deck (He most likely did because he was the original owner). No worries though, other that the suspected lazy captain, things look great down there. I am in the process of laying down wood floors in the salon exposing every hatch rather than the carpet which was a bad design choice by Hatteras. I want to have access to everything every day, and we are going to modify (slightly) the hatches design, especially over the A/C units and the generator, another poor choice by Hatteras. We intend to combine the two hatch system over the ER port and starboard to one hatch with strong arms and piano hinges to lower the grunts and groans trying to open them, and add a prop stick if necessary. Yes Odoban is working, and I opened her up and set a box fan that has been blowing full blast for days. The plan is to paint everywhere the sun don't shine, and I am taking pictures of the progress which I will post. Sorry for the delayed response but I have been trying to wash the smell out of my work clothes, but wound up trashing them to end the complaints in the house!
It's not work when you are aboard!!! I'll shoot picks and post of the salon floor when it is done also.

wow, 120 gallons. My bilges are practically dry at all times. I direct my dehumidifier into shower sump section and that is clean water. so i do not wring it until the mid spring when i remove my dehumidifier (yes, I do not need it May to October here in Pacific North West). I guess it is my paranoia having owned two sailboats where the standing water can affect keel bolts causing crevice corrosion and potential catastrophic keel failure that makes me to keep my bilges dry at all times......

My usual rant..... don't use bleach anywhere it will contact rubber as in seals, pump diaphragms etc.

I agree but replace seal or smell the s#$t. Gotta keep moma happy she carries the purse.
I do not belive it hurts the holding tank but who's going to check?

PO put an Arid Bilge System in our Hatteras. Have never had an issue. Its pricey to do but the bilges are bone dry. I have the 4 sector version.

I have a John Wayne head.

No bad smell in the bilge.

I want to see the pictures of the salon floor! We have carpet and the over engine hatches are covered up. We are thinking of installing something else also.

Welcome to the asylum!

We finish the floors this weekend, pictures to follow. I used a Pergo type flooring glued and finished nailed with a Ryobi cordless finish nail gun. It is working great. Now that the carpet is totally gone and the flooring installed, it greatly stiffened up the floor, and I can access anything anywhere at any time. It looks very nice, a Tongo Teak product from Home Depot, and it did not cost an arm and a leg. Oh and the smell is gone from the rotten egg engine bed nastiness of God knows what water...
