Been working on the 46C when time allows (not much). Got a lot of things sorted out and but the STBD throttle still isn't right. STBD throttle on both stations falls off (returns to idle) when you set it. PORT is fine.

PORT throttle is the slave for the synchronizer. This happen with the synch on or off. Only difference is of course the slave throttle follows it down with the synch on.

I have adjusted the tension in the throttle controls all the way in and it makes no difference.

Is the synchronizer doing something to cause this? Something on the STBD motor?

What about the throttle spring? Is it adjusted correctly. It shouldn't move when released on its own. Without the cable attached see if it moves or stays where its put. The tension in the binnacles is not the right way to fix it.

That's a common setup for a synchronizer so there is less "work" for the synchronizer to do when moving the slave engine throttle to match the master. As I recall (I don't have the instructions here) the Glendinning installation instructions cover that. The down side is as you have noticed - the slave engine won't hold RPM on it's own.

You can adjust the slave at the engine throttle spring to hold the setting as normal. But the synchro may lose sync/shut off if the tension on the other throttle is too high.

The general thought, operation-wise, is that the synchro is on all the time for normal operation. There are other settings that need to be checked - the slave engine has to have a lower idle RPM and a higher WOT RPM than the master. Othewise the synchro will disengage at those settings (idle/WOT).

I agree, also you could give Glendening a call, (assuming it is a Glendenning synchronizer. They are great to deal with, their customer support is outstanding.

I think MikeP's suggestion does not fit this situation, if I read it correctly it's the lead engine that is giving you the problem. No offense intended Mike.

Balance spring on the govenor throttle arm is not ajusted correctly, your starboard enging lever is most likely stiff as well. Disconnect control cable from gov. while engine is running tighten balance spring until it will not return to idle while reving engine, then loosen it off until it will just return to idle after reving it up, set jam nut, reconnect thottle cable and check it out.

good luck, let us know what ever corrects your problem.

Thanks guys.

The spring on the throttle arm sounds most likely.

The slave throttle holds fine, it is the drive throttle for the synch that won't stay up.

I will pull the cable and adjust that balance spring next time I'm on the boat.

Thanks for all the help!

Sorry, yes, I misread and was thinking it was the slave that was giving you the problem! :(

Certainly the throttle spring adjustment will correct the problem.

Is the "balance spring" same as the boost spring ? if so there is a procedure in the DD service manual for adjusting that and it is critical in order to protect against overspeed in the event of a cable failure
