48MY Guest SR AC

I can't believe I'm asking this, but I can't find any access to the aft bunk room air handler on our 48 MY. I've checked every access panel (I think) and the opposing side of the bulkhead in the ER, but can't find it! I see it on the schematics, but I still can't find the access. Any help on this would be appreciated because we're getting some exhaust in the room when the generator and AC are running and I got 2 little kids sleeping in there. Thinking there might be a tear in the ductwork. I guess I should also be checking the gen exhaust for leaks too, but the ER really doesn't smell of exhaust so not sure where it's coming from.

If your 48 is like the Series I 48, it will be in a space under the bunk in the adjoining room. Probably right behind the return register.

Thanks, Bob, but I think series I & II vary in the aft stateroom mechanicals. I do have a unit under the birth in the adjoining SR, but there is definitely another unit behind the forward wall of the smaller bunk room.

I tried to swing open the AC disribition panel today to see what's in the space behind, but encountered a lot of resistance and couldn't get it open. Should I just muscle this thing open? I'm afraid of damaging the old wiring connected to the panel.

Ah Ha. That one. On the Series I the air handler is under the upper bunk forward of the stack of drawers. Can you follow the air return system?

I have the 52' MY which is the same boat just a little longer in the aft. The AC unit is located behind the main power distribution panel. To gain access, you have to remove the stairs leading down into the main salon. I had to remove the portable fire extinguisher bracket and 8(?) screws holding the stairs in place. There are a LOT of screws under the stairs, the trick is figuring out the ones holding stairs in place versus holding the stairs together. For future reference, mark the ones holding the stairs in place. Once stairs are removed, you will find the access panel (which has to be removed) leading to the A/C unit. I replaced this unit when we first bought our boat. Had several conversations with Hatteras & hours looking at the build drawings before I finally figured it all out. Good luck!

Thanks for the info!! I gave up on this one a while back. Have you looked behind the electrical distribution panel? Mine is pretty jammed, but I thought that might be another way to get access.
