  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
1. some time ago someone posted a list or best oils for the 2 strokes i looked and could not find it.
2.I run my boat by myself a lot and sometime wish i had a thruster. I saw that the new GT has one on the stern and not the bow. I am looking into putting one on my 52 to help get away from the bock by myself. Wondering about bow or stern. Not so sure of modles or size and etc. I bo not belive i want to cut a hole in the bow. Idears please..
3 Same old story eaven though the glendenning is working (newely rebuilt) and seems fine. The tacks are off, and of course waver some. I would like to install digital tacks i think what about some feed back. Is it worth it and if so what about some name brands and modles.

Some thoughts and idears please

Tim

1. SAE 40 Wt. Shell Rotella T, DELO 100 for example.
2. Stern thrusters are useless. A bow thruster can be useful and a proper installation is fine, no fears about cutting holes if done right. The combination of a bow thruster and prop walk with mains will allow you to walk the boat in any direction easily.
3. Digital tachs are nice. I use Aetna Engineering brand.

Tim,

Go over to Western Branch, let them you know you were a loyal Covington customer and the gal there (in the office opposite the counter) will give you a good deal on DD 2 stroke 40wt which is rebranded Mobil Delvac exactly to DD specs.

Florida Bow Thruster, who is the Vetus distributor, has a big warehouse and small showroom on the west side of MHC. Give them a call at their HQ, they are real nice to deal with and will give good advice and great service.

Jim Oberci there in MHC can hook you up with some Aetnas; he has been pitching me to do it but I keep finding other projects.

On the tachs, I just checked mine with the phototach this weekend at the dock and my tachs read 50 rmps high at idle, 130 high at 2000, and 300 high at no load WOT. Digital would be nice..it also means that while I thought I was at 1900 cruise I was 1800 so I will have a little more speed...

Here is the start of a spreadsheet with the part numbers

NAPA 75118 is the oil I use

I've used the NAPA many times, it's what is in there now, but in our town (Tim's and mine) DD price has actually been better so I'm going back to that. Tim, the folks at Walkers will order the Napa 75118 for you if you want to try that (it's Valvoline and well within specs), comes the next day usually. They have good prices on Racors too, but Western Branch DD is better on oil and secondary fuel filters.

The seasmart.net digital instrument solution looks interesting. I will be looking at some sort of digital conversion to tie in to my Garmin/nema system

Tim,

Have read and appreciated your comments over the last few years.

I've have a '85 45C with no thruster which I solo now and then. Recently I purchased a '99 50C with bow thruster but had never operated a 50' before and was concerned because I wanted to be able to solo safely when needed. My broker, who I have worked closely with and relied on in these searches and maintenance, assured me that this 50C with thruster would be a joy to operate solo, and he was right. The bow thruster really reduces the stress in putting the boat in the slip in tight quarters. It lets you put the bow right where you want it and I really enjoy this 50C. Now to sell the 45C.

What engines do you have in your 50C. I think the 50C III is one of Hatts best boats. Hard to beat with the 3406 Cats. I think one repowered with Cat C18's would be a near perfect boat.

I have had the Aetna tachs for years and love them.

Straight 40 rotella is easy to find and works fine...

I can understand how a bow thruster make things easier although I would not spend the $ to install one unless i routinely had to get in and out of a tricky slip. But a stern thruster? Splitting the gears work just as good to move the stern, and with a bow thruster the boat will go sideways Pushing a stern thruster is just a marketing gimmick for dealers and vendors to make a buck...

I have never had a boat with a thruster, never thought too much about it until I ran a couple of boats with them. When it comes to docking, especially in tight quarter, wind, or current, there is nothing like them. IMHO.
As for stern thrusters, I have only ran a single screw with both bow and stern thrusters, the are the cats meow with a single. I can say I have been in several situations where having one would have been nice.

Jack,
Yes, she's got rebuilt low hour 3406's which are original to this unmolested boat and that's one of the main reasons I wanted this boat. I wanted to move up on drive train and rough water comfort, and more bunks for my boys. The 45C is a wonderful boat but this 50C is better suited for West Coast fishing and our longer planned trips. Also as you know, Hatteras has worked hard to make improvements over the years and it really shows in this model. I don't need a larger boat but I have enjoyed the 65'EB's like yours, but, if our use increases...you never know. Right now I'm very happy spending time on this boat and using it as purposed.
I appreciate the input you have given the forum since I've been a member. Its a good group of Hatteras owners and has been really helpful to me as a relatively new owner getting back into it after many years of being a 'landlubber'. Keep it up.

Here is data I collected from this forum a while back. The numbers are sulfated ash and lower is better. I have been running the NAPA oil for the past 3-4 years because I can easily buy it where ever I am. I believe 1% is the upper limit.

Exxon XD3____________.80%
Mobil Delvac 1240______.80% (if you can still find it)
Castrol Assuron________.80%
Valvoline Fleet Plus_____.80%
Delo 100______________.85%
Texaco Ursa___________.85%
Shell Rotella__________1.00%
Kendall Super D3______1.18%
Valvoline Fleet Guard Plus SAE 40 also meets the 0.8% spec
NAPA 75118 discussed here over the years, refined by Ashland/Valvoline But you can buy the exact same oil in 1 gallon jugs that is labeled Valvoline Fleet Plus.

Covington/Detroit Part#235 12734 for the 5 gallon pail; also available in gallon jugs

Bobk

The Detroit stuff is Mobil Delvac. Even has the Mobil logo on the pail now as well.

Tim, if you have the classic mechanical Glendinning synchronizer the Aetna senders screw right into that. Lauderdale Speedometer can fix you up if you want to DIY.

Are you still planning on putting your 3406's in there? Do you have the Cat displays for them? If so you won't need any of the old stuff or new electronic gauges.

Yea I know Jack the dang detroits are running grate I have already sent to much money.(i am plucked the boat is almost a 9) I am looking at another 35 to 40 gran to put those engines in so i may as well enjoy for a while they only have about 90 hours on them ...We took the boat down to Beauford SC from Morehead and back it ran fawless. Round trip about 350 miles plus or minus it was a grate trip down and back.
Not quite the motor on the cord winder went out own the way back fixed now.....

I see George but the same old problem exist. The cables between the engine and glendenning are still speed omiter type that make the tacks jump so what have you fixed. You have a digital reade out that jumps. That is what i am trying to get away from . I have replaced all the cables and rebuilt the glendenning and still have the tacks running at diffrent rpm and jumpimg Tim
