RUST STAINED Anchorlift windlass

Anyone here have any experience with an Anchorlift windlass? My slip neighbor (52 Hatt CPMY) has one and likes it. Looking at somewhat affordable rope/chain windlass options. Trying to round out eclipse of original purchase price spent on my boat this season.......

UPDATE: 3 month old new Anchorlift Windlass is rusting and has no manufacturer's warranty due to purchase on the internet from a "non authorized" dealer BEWARE!

I have installed a couple as replacements. Comparable to Lewmar.

I looked at at them and while the initial price sounded good, I was concerned with additional accessories. Switches and controls are not included. When compared to a Maxwell, which is a ready to go product, the final price is not all that far apart.

What windlass do you have now? Most can be rebuilt.

If starting from scratch, take a look at the "Good" brand windlasses which are much beloved by their owners, American made with good service. Or step to an Ideal, ditto on all counts.

Nordhavn use Maxwell, which I think are also USA made. Figure in deck repairs in the install, I suspect.

Maxwell is a New Zealand company. They are good, no doubt about that. But just because Nordhavn uses them doesn't mean much based on my observations.

Hi All,

We installed a new Maxwell RC10 rope/chain (3/8 & 5/8 respectively) on our 48YF in Jan 2008. Awesome. Extremely well made, powerful, never failed us. I believe it was appx $2k at the time but a very worthwhile investment.

The one on my boat is a Maxwell had to take the thing off and fiberglass around it. There was a seal that had leaked and was eating into the hull. Looked in the rope locker could see the salt around the electrial parts turning crusty. There was a gasket that gave way the windless was about 3 years old as best i could tell. Just a little info for you might want to check it. Tim

Hi All,

Tim, how do you like the unit itself ?

P.S. will check the gasket next time I get down to the boat.

The windlass that I have now is strictly rope only. I think it's either a Good or an Ideal. The lack of the ability to use any chain is not Good and is quite far from Ideal.

I will look at the "go withs" when I price out the Anchorlift brand. Thanks to all for your input!

Well I guess you know I have only had the boat for about 4 to 5 months so you can guess how much i have used the windless. I was trying this weekend to use a 10 foot piece of stainless chain at then end of approximately 150 foot. Got the thing all hooked up and it did not act just right. I changed it because the galvanized was rusting the windless where it wraped around. I took it apart and had the thing recromed just trying to jeep it looking good. I belive there is a diffrence between windless chain a just plane chain windless chain is uniform but that is just a guess.
My 45c had A Galley maid never has problems with it Tim

P.S> The thing is a real puzzle to take apart

Have only had the boat abouy 4 to 6 months so have not had time to use the thing . Must think a lot of it took it apart and had it rechromed. It is a puzzle to take apart. Had a gally maid on the 45 had no problems with it.

A few years ago I installed Maxwell 2200, 24 Volt, with a 110 claw, works well!

I ended up with the Anchorlift D1012C Dolphin windlass purchased in June 2013 on ebay for $700. The windlass was professionally installed in July. Here we are in October and this thing is pretty rusty. I have contacted Anchorlift by email (yesterday) and sent them these photos. So far, no reply from them. Stay tuned.

That is really bad. I have seen some bad looking 30YO Galleymaid and Ideals, but nothing like that.

Anchorlift windlass covered with rust

Still no reply to my email. Called them on the phone today and got voice mail. Left a message.

Do not want to hi-jack here but doesn't Ideal sell different capstans to meet your needs?

What I had previously was a "Good" windlass that was definitely rope only.
What I have now it turns out is pretty "Bad".

Based upon the apparent quality of the stainless, you may want to send you next message to Anchorlift in Chinese.
Lol.
Hope they respond

The Hatt oem cleats on our boat can look just like that after several months. In our case, metal polish - I've been using Flitz - cleans them up and keep them that way for 4-6 months. I have never figured out what causes the rust because it seems somewhat random both in time it takes to develop and location on the cleats. In our case, it LOOKS like rust but acts more like a surface stain. Your pics look the same way to me but that could be due to the angle/lighting.
