  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
38' DOUBLE CABIN (1967 - 1971)
I believe this is the earliest I've ever taken the boat out. No regrets though. It was an outstanding Summer in terms of weather. I spent some time marking out the lifting points on the boat this time. Accurate to a half inch. I noticed they missed with the slings by damn near a foot. Is this really much of a problem on a smaller boat? (38 footer) I didn't detect any issues after it was put up on blocks.

Not a problem. Only time it gets dicey is if the boat shifts while in the slings. The "Straps Here" markings are for weight distribution of the hoist - they need to get near an equilibrium point fore and aft for weight (but they can also raise and lower the slings up or down a little to compensate). Biggest thing is to make sure they lower the straps low enough to go under your stabilizer fins (if you would have them) and to also block (a 2"x4" on each side under the quarter fender) for the aft quarter fenders near the water line (guess how I know - yard is making that repair this winter in the barn).

Interesting lifting rigs... they don't use Travel Lifts out there?

Some do, but I see more use of stationary cranes like this or some big mobile cranes in these parts. These cranes are pretty quick and probably cheaper to maintain once they are set up. They sure are a lot quieter. The down side is that it requires a secondary operation when they set it on a tow vehicle to move it into the storage building where they set it on blocks.

My yard (and most others around) use the travel haul, power wash, then set on a hydraulic trailer to move in the barn. They get the boats to within inches with the trailer. Couldn't do that with the travel haul.

That's what they do at the yard I haul out with. They get the boat out of the water using the Travel Lift, and then they use a trailer called a Con O Lift, I think to move it to where it's blocked. They can get them much closer together that way.

Not too far off, unfortunately, the week around Thanksgiving, for me. Didn't do much boating this year, but she will look very good in the spring.

Man, I have to hand it to you guys who own a boat and only use it half the year. I could never be that devoted. If I couldn't use my boat year around, I wouldn't own one, I'd go back to chartering.
Still shorts and T-shirt weather here in NC, anchored out in the Bight on what might be the nicest evening all year.

A very long time ago, the first boat I owned of any substance was a 32' Tollycraft in Seattle. we were young and making more money than we knew what to do with (so kinda dumb too in that sense). We used that boat all the time. I remember the founder and president of the company taking me aside at a trade show in Seattle and offering me a huge promotion to run Chicago and the MidWest. He made a long pitch to me and at the end asked "well what do you think?" The first words out of my mouth were "I'm gonna have to sell my boat!" he knew about the boat and was a power boater himself down in the Bay Area, the boat had become sorta famous in the company because everybody who came in from corporate to visit eventually got a ride. So he said "that's not a problem.. we'll move it for you" I said "uh uh, a four or five month season? Fuggedaboutit!" I took the job and sold the boat.... still second guess myself a little about that one, but can't complain about how it all has turned out. We were just talking about that boat a few minutes ago over dinner.
