  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
Does any one know of a source of used components for 6V92? My mech may have this covered already, but I'm going to need a bell housing.

Thanks,
Bobk

Great suggestion. They did all the work on the engine on my Willard 40 when I lived in Portsmouth. Fantastic work and great to deal with. :)

Thanks guys. I sent the info to my mech. Any others?

What is wrong with your housing?

What is wrong with your housing?

My mech (Frank Butt, AP Marine, best guy in Baltimore) is replacing a rear main seal which had begun to leak very badly. That engine was rebuilt about 200 hours before I bought the boat and survey showed a slight leak (darker oil in that trans than the other). When my mech pulled the seal on Wednesday, he found that someone had screwed up the space the seal fits in and glued one in with silicone. New seal does not fit properly and my mech advised replacing the housing with a used one if we can find it. We are open to alternate ideas as well.

PS, the leak went from 2 quarts/1000 miles when I bought it to 10 quarts/1000 and I didn't want to see a total failure on the waterway.

PPS, that is one serious mistake on each of the engines that the PO's owner had rebuilt by another respected (but not DD) mechanic. Go figure.

YUK. There are always DD parts on E bay . I believe S&S in TX has a used parts division as well as a bunch of places in Louisiana. Might call United Diesel in LA. Gold coast in FLL is very expensive but probably has what you need.

It will probably be cheaper to buy a junk engine than to buy the single part.
Unfortunately, I have a new housing but not for an Allison.

Perkins Diesel in Chesapeake had one.... actually many. Also had all gaskets etc in stock. $650+ tax and it was cleaned up ready to go. This is a good outfit to book mark. Thanks again.

Hopefully all goes well. It took 5.5 hours to remove the exhaust and other parts to remove the transmission. The next day the trans was out and rebuilt (seals shot, clutches were OK) and ready to install in four more hours. What a joy to have a good mechanic.

We are doing some 'while you are in theres' and hope to get her back together early next week.

Thanks for pointing in the right direction Diesel
