  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I am looking at project boats to complete my way. (yes I know how dumb and expensive this way is)
Two of the boats have black mold inside and I need to know how to get rid on it before I move the boat south. Interior is not an issue because it is all going to be replaced. I just need what works! one has it in the bilge as well. HELP!!!!

Thanks to all,

It takes a bit of work. I had to do this a few years ago in the condo and did not find a product that would kill/remove it without scrubbing. Google for details. I scrubbed with bleach solution then applied a quat salt similar to Microban.

You may also need to correct the water/moisture source that is the cause of the mold. It is not a normal occurance. I found a lot of it in a MY a few years ago where there was a bridge and sundeck leak that had not been addressed. Wear proper breathing protection.

Liquid Pool shock works great but make sure you wear a mask. I use it on fenders power cords even my 13 whaler when it gets those mold spots in the gelcote that even softscrub wont take out.

Yep -- liquid pool stuff is 10% Chlorine and will kill that black stuff dead. Just don't get it on anything you don't want bleached, wear good protective gear and make sure you don't inhale any of the vapor!

Does it work better than straight bleach? I've never had good luck getting white fenders or power cords clean.

way better, just dont breath it I've tried all the powercord cleaners too but the shock really works with no scrubbing

Do you want to get rid of the mold or just kill the visable mold. The short answer to "kill the visable" is: Step one: thoroughly wet with a mixture of 1/3 bleach - 2/3 water with a squirt of Dawn thrown in. The detergent acts as a surfactant to wet the mold. Repeat as required. Step two: wash with fresh water (bleach will form salts when dried). Use respirator with P-100 filter when working with bleach

I have used mineral spirits in the past with a scotch brite pad. Worked like a charm, but do not the chemistry of why. Turned a black cord to yellow again. A detailer told me this trick.
