  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
Thanks to a forum member of whom I bought a water maker last year, I must say it has been awesome! for those of you that think a watermaker is a pain in the ass, let me tell you that it has been a god send for us. Our water usage has always been sky high. Ask Pascal or Angela and EdGaito and they will tell you that my crew can go through a load of water in a day or two! Last week we spent a week at Elliot Key with a bunch of friends spread out among 11 boats. We never ran out of water even as we topped off a big Bertram and a big Tiara! Anyhow, just wanted to pass along the thoughts of a satisfied WM user. We have a Village Marine "No frills" unit. 450 gal a day unit.

So glad it is working out for you Mario. The way I use my boat I never needed it and was getting tired of servicing it. I figure by the time life lets me cruise Bahamas etc, I will have elected to upgrade to a more automated modular unit anyway.

Terrific that it is getting use. Enjoy!

With my wife and two daughters (college age) who have a love affair with water and can use 20 gals just on their hair I will also attest to the value of a water maker especially in the Bahamas. We ran it last night while we were sleeping and we have a full tank in the morning. We have a cruise ro unit that is pretty basic (I did not want the auto features that to me bring in un-realibility) and simple to use. We produce about 36 gals per hour which in the Bahamas means about 18.00 per hour that I am not directly paying out to the Marinas. I keep a years supply of filters on board so regular maintenance is not a problem. I am with you Mario!

Hello Mario....We are also the proud owners of a 1972 58YF. We have been debating on a watermaker and would like to talk to you regarding yours....installation, etc. rivrratz@bellsouth.net. Thanks, Lee and Marty Keller M/V Evergreen

My uncle has been using one for years in the bahamas. Aside frome some filter problems every once in a while it has been a great investment. Just being able to wash the boat after a good day of use and not worry about how much water you are using makes it almost worth it. Throw in a couple of ladies and it almost becomes a necessity. The water his unit makes is cleaner than any city water and that is all that has gone in his tanks for many a year now. (if you want to drive some sail boat owners crazy start throwing ice overboard in the anchorage on a hot day). I can't rember why the guy was doing it but there were some verry upset sailors.

I am looking for a water maker, Parker (Village Marine) just quoted me 11.4K for a STW400 can this be right?

We will second that regarding the watermaker. We are headed home tomorrow after 72 days at anchor up in the Channel Islands in Southern California. We make water every morning for an hour and it usually has a salinity of about 210 ppm. Almost like distilled water. Our unit is a 24 gph Village Marine. We couldn't even think about being away from the dock that long without it. Occasional filter cleaning if the vacuum gauge shows we need it is all we do while out on a cruise. Ross

finally a HOF member in southern california. which island were you at?

There are a few of us. Daybreak, Courageous, Habanero, Ross, and Nor'easter I know personally, but there are others.

I also have a Village Marine. Simple and robust, no extra "features" to fail. In seven years of use I've replaced one pressure switch. And filters, but they don't count as a failure.

We left May 30 and coastal hopped up to Santa Barbara. Stayed in Dana Point, Newport Beach, Marina del Rey and SB. Over to Santa Cruz Island for a slow circumnavigation, staying in some of our favorite anchorages, then on down to Catalina where we have stayed the rest of the summer. Howlands, Emerald, Cat Harbor, Avalon. Then back to Newport Beach where, as of Friday, we have been living on the hard for haul out, bottom job, etc. Friday we head south back to San Diego. We are pretty limited here on cruising grounds unless we head to Mexico. (which we will be doing in December.) The old Hatt is getting alot of miles on her. Ross

Hi Ross,

We've got a 'new for us' 50C in San Diego bay and have been keeping the 45C in Channel Islands
Marina for the last several years playing off Anacapa and Santa Cruz, and will put it on the market. We'd like to take the 50C to Cabo next Oct/Nov. Did you make it to Mexico last December? Would love to hear of your experiences and advice.
