I just recieved this from a boating friend that i help-Bayliner guy but it still applies to all boaters.
Boy, have I had an “interesting”morning. Went down to the boat late yesterday to stay over and get her all tucked in for being gone for a while. Decided to start her up and let her run for a few minutes this morning. Right.
Ran the blower for a while, then tried to kick her over. Very sluggish response; fired once and then kind of sounded like she was giving up the ghost—odd sounding. Checked battery selector, set on both. Opened engine compartment so I could hear better. Tried again. First try – no change. Second try – huge bang accompanied by smoke in engine room. One of the batteries just flat out exploded. The remaining battery still showed in the system – instruments, etc, came on line—but absolutely no starter response; dead. So I have no idea how much damage. (The battery that exploded was in a battery box with a top on it which is probably what allowed a vapor build up but not sucked out by blower; top blown off, bits and pieces of battery scattered around. )
I’ve mopped up a bit of what might have been spill (battery box is still intact), cut all the circuits and breakers out, set the battery selector to OFF, and disconnected shore power completely to safe everything. I’m probably going to hook up with Bill Burns and take a new battery down this afternoon and try to figure out if there is any collateral damage. The fun never ends.
He was very lucky.
